We are so blessed to have this farm and for our kids to learn about animal husbandry and how to raise healthy food.  This year we have been finding new ways to share the farm with our "extended" family at church.  We have been bringing "fuzzy" treats to our Sunday School class. Our class only has 7 kids normally, but all the primary children come to our room after their class because they know that we bring fun baby animals to hold. So far we have brought: kittens, chicks, ducklings, and rabbit kits. Next time, we will bring our turkey poults. We also have hosted two primar ..read more

The weekend before heading off to church youth camps, the big kids and hubby went on a scout camp out to Swallow Falls.  They had a great time hiking around and playing in, on, and behind the waterfalls. This past Saturday this young kids had a primary Pioneer Day activity.  They had sack races, a stick pull, made butter, and shared pioneer stories from their ancestors.  We also helped our buddies tattoo their 10 young kits in preparation for the county fair.   ..read more

The big kids and Hubby went off on another week long camping adventure -- the boys to Young Men's camp in Delaware and big sister A to Camp Round Meadow near Cunningham Falls.  I think they all had a great time.  The boys were "roughing it" a lot more than the girls.  The girls had cabins with bathroom facilities this year.  Big sister A said that they had plenty of snacks.  Snacks available all day long practically and lots of candy being passed around.  Lots of camp songs were sung. Bishop's night skits: The girls did some rock climbing and hiking ..read more

*This post is about a month old. I was waiting to post it until I had the "good" pictures from my dad's camera*  We drove up to my dad's house in upstate NY for my birthday weekend. On Saturday, we hiked up Fillmore Glen State Park's gorge trail and visited Buttermilk Falls. The trails were clean and well kept with lots of stone and stone steps.  After our hiking adventures we drove to the Dairy Barn, an ice cream store that I used to ride my bike to when I was a kid.  I pointed out the petting zoo where I worked when I was 15 and we drove by the ho ..read more

Lots of work and fun adventures in May on the farm.  We have ducklings, kittens, rabbit kits, and chicks hatching next week. The crops are shooting up and so are the weeds. We have had a Family Weeding Day each of the last two Fridays and we could use another one soon.  The kids opted for Cafe Rio dinner for one week's reward and Chinese food the following week.  Lucky Ducky little A has a brilliant older brother who made this cardboard tractor with him during his "Andy watching" time.  Brother S planned a campout with our local W family friends for his birthday exp ..read more

We added solar power lights around the perimeter of the high tunnel. The boys helped me get them set-up for their garden chore one morning. It was hot in there, so we were happy to irrigate while working.    Brother S bought himself an extra 40 lengths of hotwheels tracks and put them to good use with several long jumps and stunt tracks.  We did some interesting science experiments - one was trying to harvest oil from sunflower seeds. First we ground our homegrown seeds with the corn mill.  Then we used the tiny press that came with our science kit.  It m ..read more

It's been hard to catch up from our Utah trip.  Five days after we arrived home my old roommate and her oldest boy came to stay with us for a few days of their Easter break.  I created a very intense itinerary to help them see as much of the local Washington DC sites as possible to cram into 2 days.  We were exhausted at the end :) But we did ALL the fun things. Here is what we did: Thursday 8:45am leave home for the DC temple. Drive 45 minutes to: Washington DC Temple 10 am baptistry/Initiatories- 12 noon bag lunch on the road I hung out with the littles while Tiffany and ..read more

We made a big trip to Utah to visit hubby's grandma for her 100th birthday. Our original plan was to drive to Utah since airfares to SLC were far too expensive for the 7 of us. Luckily, a friend suggested we try finding flights into Las Vegas.  We found some very inexpensive tickets to Las Vegas, rented a car and drove from there.  Big Sister A had seen a fancy doughnut (her favorite dessert) shop on YouTube and was SUPER excited that we were going to be in that neighborhood (Vegas).  Our flight was delayed and we had a very short night sleep at a local hotel.  Then we ..read more

Farm Family Fun: Spring Activities - Soil Testing and Chicken Harvesting
Freestyle Homemaking

We are deep into spring gardening now. We did soil testing early in the month.  The kids helped collect the soil samples with our new soil probe. We collected 15 columns of soil each from the high tunnel, fenced garden and orchard.  A chicken hopped into the soil testing bowl.   I finished updating this cupboard. I needed more space for keeping my dried herbs and foods.   A group of friends from our ward came over and helped us process the 72 high tunnel roosters. We did the processing in the high tunnel and the kids did a wonderful job helping.  Everyth ..read more
