Mount Cammerer – Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Although it’s a roundtrip hike of more than 11 miles, this hike to Mt. Cammerer is still the shortest and most commonly used route to the summit of the 4928-foot mountain. From the trailhead hikers will climb the Low Gap Trail for three long miles before reaching the Appalachian Trail. This is a steep and relentless climb that traverses over several switchbacks, while taking hikers through a beautiful, mature hardwood forest as they proceed up the Cosby Creek valley ..read more

Cumberland Trail- Emory River Gorge Section

This section of the Cumberland Trail will eventually climb from Emory River Gorge within the National Park Service (NPS)-administered Obed Wild and Scenic River (WSR) to the edge of the Cumberland Mountains in the town of Wartburg. Emory River Gorge marks the place where the current version of the Cumberland Trail departs from the trail’s original route. Although only 1.3 miles of the CT have been constructed in this section to date, entirely within the Obed WSR, the section contains several gems. The iron bridge over the Emory River is piece of history saved only by the efforts of those with ..read more

Rock Creek Loop- Big South Fork

The Rock Creek Loop in Big South Fork National Recreation Area is A 7-mile loop that highlights a lot of the features that Big South Fork is known for. Several rock houses, water crossings, and good views throughout. This hike has great solitude. We saw one couple backpacking the John Muir trail with their dog. Saw no one else the entire time. My Jeep was the only vehicle at the trailhead parking at start and finish. A Tip on this one – if you feel like you’ve suddenly lost the trail , it crosses the creek. I would definitely like to do this one again in spring ..read more

Cumberland Trail- Black Mountain to Ozone Falls

I did a section of the Cumberland Trail in January- Black mountain to Ozone Falls. It was snowing when we started and socked on with clouds so I have no photo from the Black mountain overlook. About 2 miles from Ozone Falls we hear grunts. Looked over to the right and see a few large wild pigs running around. They didn’t bother us but I tell you I’m completely mortified by wild pigs! The Cumberland trail is always a challenging one , very remote but very beautiful. Our small group of 3 did not see any other hikers before we got to the waterfall ..read more

Andrews Bald , Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Pics from a recent hike to Andrews Bald , which is always a favorite of mine. I took some friends visiting from Oregon. The trail begins from the Clingmans Dome parking lot and drops elevation to get to Andrews Bald. After a large descent, it levels on a broad ridge, soon diverting to the right at mile 1.1. A final ascension through a forest will bring you to the grassy Andrews Bald, named for the cattle herder, Andres Thompson, who brought livestock up here in the 1840s. Depending on the time of year, hikers can find patches of blackberries and raspberries, Fraser firs, and bluets, a small, b ..read more

Honey creek loop is one of the most beautiful and difficult hikes in Tennessee. I call it the “Garden of Eden” hike or the “Chutes and Ladders” hike. Iron deposits in the rocks create swirls. This is seen often throughout the loop One of many beautiful waterfalls on the loop Eastern newt Early spring wildflowers View from the overlook. You have to climb a tall set of ladders to get here from the loop. A beautiful forested section and stream You see this a lot in Big South Fork , and the Cumberland mountains. The trees find a way to grow out of and around boulders. Fascinating to see A rock hou ..read more
