On Career & Motherhood: Part 3
The Real Life RD
by Robyn
3y ago
I’ve written about career & motherhood a few times already. Once right after I had my first baby and once during my pregnancy with my second baby. Part three of me writing about career and motherhood has been a long time coming. If you’ve stuck around over the past couple years, thank you. My firstborn, Caleb, just turned two last month and it completely blows my mind how wildly different my life looks now than it did two short years ago. Before Cal was born, I was working 40-60 hours a week between this blog, the private practice and the part time work I was doing as an NP on a inpa ..read more

Self Care in the thick of Motherhood
The Real Life RD
by Robyn

I’m finding it more realistic for me to write two blog posts a month if I’m writing more lifestyle & motherhood posts versus posts that dive into the science and require me to do a lot of reading on PubMed and cite references. I’d love to get back to that place in the next few months, but right now it feels better for me to write “less science-y” posts but still write (because I enjoy it) versus not write at all because I don’t have enough time. So, I hope you’re enjoying these posts. And if you’re waiting for the latter type of posts, I’ll get there at some point! Being mama to two under ..read more

Thoughts on the Fourth Trimester
The Real Life RD
by Robyn
3y ago
Here we are at 11 weeks postpartum and almost at the end of the fourth trimester. What happened to time?! The postpartum period following Teddy’s birth has been quite different than the postpartum following my firstborn, Caleb. I am really thankful for his birth – it truly was just as I had hoped and an answer to many, many prayers. In fact, it was so smooth it felt too good to be true. I knew there had to be some bumps in my future – that’s not how birth and life work, but birth and life also are not a bump-less ride. Overall, I’m really satisfied (if that’s the right word?) with how I navig ..read more

How I Meal Plan Nowadays
The Real Life RD
by Robyn

Now with two tiny humans in the mix, I needed to adjust how I meal plan right now. Near the end of pregnancy I was tired and lacked inspiration and so meal planning looked like this: DINNER Sunday = cook Monday = eat Sunday leftovers Tuesday = cook Wednesday = eat Tuesday leftovers Thursday = clean out fridge or eggs + toast for dinner Lunch sandwiches + chips + fruit/veg for like 6 weeks straight lol Now with a newborn and toddler, I don’t have time (and don’t want to take time) to make a sandwich during nap time because usually, I’m not child free during Cal’s naps. Sometimes I get Teddy t ..read more

Life Lately

We are living in weird times man. Some snippets of life lately around here… My one essential piece of baby gear right now When it comes to baby gear, I’m a more-is-less kind of person. With home/life stuff in general, I tend towards that end of the spectrum. The only thing safe in our house is my husband and my kids (kidding…kind of) everything else has potential to be tossed, donated, etc. Less stuff makes me a more sane human. But just like with books in our house, with baby carriers I don’t do the less-is-more thing. I loved wearing Cal and keeping him close and he also loved being worn ..read more

Teddy’s Birth Story
The Real Life RD
by Robyn
3y ago
Today, I’m sharing Teddy’s birth story – I tend to get wordy with birth stories, so heads up, this post is long. After sharing Caleb’s birth story, I found it really therapeutic to write it all out and share. I also recognize, birth stories are deeply personal and fertility, pregnancy, and birth are tender topics. Having now grown and birthed two babies, as a mama I somewhat understand the intense grief that can surround pregnancy and babies – but also would never pretend to fully understand, having yet to walk through that kind of grief myself. But I want you to know, if you’re waiting ..read more

Postpartum Recovery Essentials: Round 2
The Real Life RD
by Robyn

I had my last appointment with the UVA midwives at 30 weeks and then I transitioned care to a certified nurse-midwife who does home birth. On my list of “things I’ll never do” is home birth. I’d like to write a post on how we made our choice to have a home birth at some point because when Nick and I started processing home birth together, I wanted to hear from as many Western medicine providers who chose home birth as I possibly could. For some reason, knowing people who work in hospitals and help birth babies in hospitals (particularly OBGYNS) and also choose home birth really resonated with ..read more

5 Thoughts

1. our world I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling like 2020 has been a heavy year. Particularly the past few weeks with the murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. Social media, while it can be powerful and positive, has felt like a really noisy place for me lately. I have an aversion to performative allyship – it doesn’t sit right with me and so I’ve found it challenging to know how to both consume and engage on social media. The change that needs to happen in our world is a marathon, not a sprint. The amount off change that needs to happen can feel overwhelming. I’ve been of ..read more

How to Get Your Period Back Postpartum & Conceiving While Breastfeeding
The Real Life RD

This is part two of a two part series on breastfeeding – you can read part one here. My goal with this series is to provide information that’s a little harder to find when you start digging around on the internet. I don’t know everything about breastfeeding and I am certainly not an IBCLC. What I’m sharing in this series is a combination of my nursing knowledge, a lot of time spent researching, and my experience as a mama. I hope you find it empowering & encouraging! One of the most common questions I’ve received over the last year center around 1) how to know when your period will come ..read more

This is a two part series on breastfeeding I’ve been wanting to write for a long time. This is part one on milk supply. There is a good bit of evidence based articles on the internet full of helpful breastfeeding information. I don’t know everything about breastfeeding and I am certainly not an IBCLC. What I’m sharing in this series is a combination of my nursing knowledge, a lot of time spent researching, and my experience as a mama. I hope you find it empowering &a ..read more
