In March, we had 35 adoptions! With your support, 11 sick or injured cats received the medical care they needed, from treating stomach issues to reducing arthritis pain. When the shelters become too crowded or overwhelming, you helped us bring 13 stressed and shy cats into calm environments so they could find and grow their confidence. You helped 2 seniors receive the love and care they needed to blossom into their best selves for potential adopters, 6 black cats receive the attention and promotion needed to be noticed, and 9 cats in bonded pairs go home with their best friend and explore a ne ..read more

Finding Carmen Sandiego

Cat Town microchips each of our cats, so that if they ever turn up lost, we can be reached to help reunite them with their guardian — or, if need be, take them back into our care.  When we received an email that one of our cats had been recovered, we phoned the finder to learn what had happened. It turns out that Frito, who had been adopted from us as a kitten in 2013, had been surrendered to a city shelter in San Diego after being rehomed multiple times. We soon learned that she was now 10 years old, had been avoiding her litter box for a year, wasn’t benefiting from anxiety medication ..read more

This February, we leapt with joy to see 28 wonderful cats find their homes, including Forgotten Kittens, seniors, cats with medical needs, and graduates of our Feral or Fearful Program! We’re especially proud and grateful to see these cats adopted because they found the support they needed at Cat Town thanks to support from our community.  These cats’ transformations wouldn’t be possible without support from people like you. Because of you, we are helping keep euthanasia rates at the city shelter as low as possible, snd helping each of these cats find the right person to love them in the ..read more

Your support helped us surpass our all-time record, with a whopping 463 adoptions in 2023, and ensured we could stay focused on supporting the cats who needed us most. While we shared many of our team’s favorite adoptions with you from the year, we have one more to share as we reflect on all you helped us accomplish and the work we look forward to doing in 2024. This is Adeline’s story of Crouton: A staff member assesses Crouton in our Studios. Photo by David Yeung. Crouton was one of the first “Feral or Fearful” cats we brought in to assess as part of our collaborative project with Oakland ..read more

We’re wrapping up the year with more of our favorite adoptions of 2023! As we look ahead to 2024, we hope to share more of these stories with you. Thank you for supporting Cat Town’s work, and making outcomes like these an everyday occurrence for cats who have so few options at the shelter. Your support makes all the difference, and gives these cats a chance at a loving home!   Andrew’S PICK: chadwick For this blog post, I was tasked with sharing one of my favorite adoptions from this year. However, I find myself drawn to recount the story of the very last adoption from last year. In Dec ..read more

Batman at Cat Town. Photo by Teresa Wood. “In all the years I've been at the shelter, I've never seen a cat as scary as Batman.” This is what one volunteer at Oakland Animal Services told us when they learned that Batman had been adopted. It just goes to show how hard our friends at OAS worked to give this cat his best chance at a safe and happy life in a home. Batman was left at the shelter overnight, with no information aside from a collar with his name and a bag of cat food. At the shelter, he was incredibly fractious — lunging, growling, and hissing at everyone. You could hear him from d ..read more

In November, we shared some of our team’s most memorable adoption stories from this year. Here are more of our favorites! Each of these adoptions was made possible by a collective effort:  the shelter workers and volunteers on the front lines, taking in an enormous quantity of animals every day, our staff working with the shelter to identify the cats at the most risk and provide them with a safety net they can’t find anywhere else, our volunteers who move heaven and earth in foster homes and at our Adoption Center to help these cats feel safe and healthy, our adopters who carry th ..read more

Dream's Story

Dream spent her first few weeks at our Adoption Center hissing at anyone who came near. Photo by Erica Danger. When Dream arrived at the shelter with her kittens, she was frozen in fear, and would hiss at anyone who got too close. She was 10 months old — too old to be a Forgotten Kitten — but she seemed open to change. When shelter volunteers approached her slowly and gently, she’d allow them to pet her. It would be an uphill battle to win her heart, but we had to take a chance at giving her a better life. We brought her to our Adoption Center to start the long process of building up confide ..read more
