This week we had an errand which required us to drop off us German Sheppard-Dutch mix, Buddy, off in the morning and picking him up in the afternoon, so we decided to fit in some fishing at Picnic Island Park during the wait. Picnic Island Park It felt like an eternity had passed since our visit to E.G. Simmons Park and we were very much in need of some relaxing fishing. Picnic Island Park Picnic Island Park is nestled in the middle of Tampa Bay. Off the east side of the Old Tampa Bay, it boasts an “off-leash retreat for dogs, offering ocean access, tranquil waters & picnic tables for huma ..read more

Why We Love Minecraft – Chemistry

I have found that our son picks up and abandons things at different times and for different reasons. We can trace it back to ADHD or ASD or a myriad of other things. Over the years, we have purchased several educational games trying to get him interested in them. About a year ago, we tried our hand with Minecraft and found that he enjoyed it for a while but it failed to pique his interest and he quickly abandoned it. Time passed and he didn’t even mention it. So when our son picked it up for a second time, I hoped he would become intrigued by the more educational aspects of it. While re-instal ..read more

For our third year on our Homeschooling Journey, we kept the focus heavy on STEAM.  STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. How It All Began It all began 3 years ago when we got our son his first Kano Computer for his 4th Birthday. The operating system uses games to teach about how computer parts work together and even get started with Linux commands. 2017 The Kano also helps kids get started with code via Scratch and Scratch Jr. Both are block-based visual languages developed by MIT to teach the foundational concepts of coding. This week being the end of our Third Grade Curriculum, I took an extra day off from work to celebrate. Dad took this opportunity to sneak in some extra credit and an extra day of fishing, so we decided to go to E.G. Simmons Park. E.G. Simmons Park E.G. Simmons is a stone’s throw away from us and boasts 258 acres of native mangroves and open land areas, intertwined with waterways. It also has an additional 200 acres of mangrove swamp preserved as a bird and wildlife sanctuary. They offer swimming, camping, kayak rentals & picnic facilities. The entrance to the park was only $2.00 per car ..read more

This week, Fishing Class took us to Fort Desoto for a session of Pier Fishing. After last week’s shore fishing session, it was nice to go back to a pier. We started off our trip with a planned stop at Gator Jim’s Fishing Tackle Center as Dad wanted to take a look at their selection of Traps and other Fishing Swag. Dad picked out a trap and a telescoping landing net. He said he wanted it for Fish but he is also going to use for Crab. We also stopped at the Bait Bucket for some Fresh Shrimp and a mini-bucket with bubbler and we made our way to Fort Desoto Park. Fort Desoto Park Fort Desoto Par ..read more

As 2020 kicked off and the news of COVID 19 was taking over the media, we had our own very personal news taking over our lives as our son was officially diagnosed with ASD and Severe ADHD. It didn’t come as a great surprise but it did drastically change how we did things. With everything changing and the addition of Grandma helping with homeschooling, one of the things we knew was going to be key to our success was routines. Routines are especially important for kids with ASD and ADHD. They help set expectations and reduce frustration for everyone involved. To keep things running smoothly, we ..read more

Homeschooling: Third Grade [Our Curriculum 2019-2020]

Last year, we homeschooled First and Second Grade in just over 18 months. I decided to create a framework but gave myself the freedom to adjust on the fly and try new things as needed and I’m happy to report that it worked really well. Organization Towards the end of the year, we discovered Scholaric and I love it! It has helped keep me on track even during those weeks when our focus isn’t as strong and I can push back or reschedule items for later if needed. The UI isn’t very flashy but I can appreciate the simplicity of it and I can’t complain about the price, just $3.00 a month. Language Ar ..read more

Last year, we kicked off Third Grade with some expectations and as luck would have it everything changed midway. Just as the COVID-19 Quaranteen was getting started our son was diagnosed with ASD and Severe ADHD. Third Grade We still homeschooled year-round as it’s what works best for us but we took several short breaks and had time off when we needed it. STARTING AT THE CORE As we close out our year and finish off our Curriculum. History I really like the lessons built into Build Your Own Library as they follow the Charlotte Mason Style 4-year cycle. This year we were covering Early Modern H ..read more

Fishing Class took us to Venice Beach

After the success of our last trip, the boys were excited as this week’s Fishing Class took us to Venice Beach. We gathered up our FishBites swag we had been preparing for our next adventure and hit the road. The plan was to hit the water, find some Fossils and Fish. Talking about Conservation I was surprised to see so much Sea Grape with fruit as we walked into the beach area. We have a small one growing on the property but hadn’t seen any sign of fruiting. I pointed out the fruit and told our son about the plant’s importance as a windbreak for the shoreline. Then we talked about how some pe ..read more

A few months back, our son started playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons. We quickly found that one of his favorite things to do in the game was Fishing. So we were not surprised when we asked him what he wanted to do for his birthday that his answer was “I want to go Fishing like in Animal Crossing” Dad was particularly excited to hear this. He started researching where we could go and what we needed to get for a successful trip. He ordered some odds and ends and was particularly intrigued by Fish Bites and this Gear Knots Tool. We also stopped at Skyway Bait & Tackle for some Medium Shr ..read more
