First Summits - Junction Hill, Kananaskis
Family Adventures In The Canadian Rockies
by Tanya Koob
3y ago
Junction Hill had been on my hit list for years until we finally checked it off our list this past week in the early part of June. It's a great hike for late spring once the snow has melted, and the hills were a vibrant green all around us with flowers everywhere we looked. Many people hike this trail earlier in spring, but I'm glad we waited because I prefer hiking on dry rock that's not covered in slippery ice. Climbing the East Ridge on Junction Hill  Know going in that this is not a hill. This is definitely a mountain despite the name. I also recommend doing the loop counter ..read more

White Buddha and Vents Ridge - Family Hiking in Kananaskis
Family Adventures In The Canadian Rockies

Vents Ridge had been on my hiking list for years, way before it suddenly became popular this spring! I was always intimidated though by the lack of directions I had for this unofficial trail and the route-finding I'd heard was a challenge. Enter the modern era with apps like All Trails, and you can practically hold your phone out in front of you to follow a little blue dot all the way to the summit!  Gorgeous scenery on Vents Ridge in the Elbow Valley  Hiking in the Elbow Valley This hike is located in the Elbow Valley just down the road from Elbow Falls, near the Prairie M ..read more

Epic Family Bike Rides: The Best Spring Rides near Calgary
Family Adventures In The Canadian Rockies
by Tanya Koob

Every spring bike ride feels epic when you find glorious dry pavement and start to use those muscles again (and definitely not the same ones you used for skiing.) Featured in this guide are my family's favourite spring rides in and around Calgary. Some are wonderfully flat and great for novice riders, others are more challenging and offer a good hill training workout (which you'll need for mountain biking come summer.) I've also included a few rides my family hasn't done yet - but that are on our hit list for this spring! Spring is a great time for closed highway riding! (Photo: Highway ..read more

Family Adventures In The Canadian Rockies

We love spring biking in Calgary when the mountain trails are still icy and snow covered. You can go skiing in the morning, return to Calgary and go for a great bike ride - all in the same day. In this guide I've featured our favourite pathways and trails around Calgary. I've started with pathways in the north, continued to our favourite pathways in the south, and ended with a couple of destinations just outside Calgary. Calgary has many amazing bike paths and trails across the city! (Photo: Nose Hill Park) Biking around Bowness, Baker Park, and Bowmont, NW Calgary  We live in t ..read more

Epic Family Bike Rides: Johnston Canyon via the 1A Highway
Family Adventures In The Canadian Rockies
by Tanya Koob

Johnston Canyon is one of the most popular hikes in Banff National Park and I'm convinced it's been plastered across billboards world wide. We used to avoid this crowded trail most summers but last year access was closed to vehicles (to promote physical distancing) and it suddenly became a beautiful, peaceful hike to do with the family (requiring a short bike ride to reach the trailhead.) Access continues to be closed to vehicles and the highway will be ours to bike once again this year. The 1A Highway is a great spring bike ride in Banff!  Biking on the Closed Highway 1A You'l ..read more

Every spring we take a day trip to Drumheller to bike to the ghost town of Wayne. On the bike ride you cross 11 one-lane bridges on a scenic country road that winds its way through the badlands, making for some spectacular scenery! Visiting the Ghost Town of Wayne near Drumheller Road Biking to the Ghost Town of Wayne  First up, know that you'll be biking on a shared road with vehicles. Bike and Hike Closed Campgrounds near Calgary this Spring
Family Adventures In The Canadian Rockies

You'll meet very few people if you go exploring around a closed campground near Calgary this spring. We love biking the quiet roads when they're closed to vehicles and many campgrounds also have great interpretive trails for hiking. You'll even find playgrounds in many of the featured campgrounds which you'll most likely have to yourself. We love biking around the Bow Valley Campground in spring I'm telling you about my favourite campgrounds to explore this spring in hopes that it inspires families to go beyond the usual trailheads. Trust me, there is life beyond Elbow Falls and Barr ..read more

Jump into Spring at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort

My family has spent a lot of time at the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort over the years and it's always been one of our favourite places to spend a weekend while exploring in the East Kootenay Rockies of British Columbia. Spring is especially glorious when there's already green grass and dry trails in April. Add hot pools to soak in, and it's a pretty sweet place for a family getaway. Spring at Fairmont Hot Springs is pretty glorious! Move over Mexico, Hello Fairmont Hot Springs Resort On our last visit to the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, I actually felt like we were on an all inclusive ..read more

Big Mountain Skiing, Small Hill Charm at Castle Mountain Resort
Family Adventures In The Canadian Rockies
by Tanya Koob

I'm always amazed when fellow Calgarians tell me that they've never skied Castle. Castle Mountain Resort is only 3 hours south of Calgary, easily reached Friday evening, and it's a local Alberta resort!  Castle has accommodations on site with options for all budgets, and with spring coming, you can also bring your trailer down and camp in the parking lot (It's absolutely allowed here!) Spring is here and Castle Mountain is calling! The ski hill itself is out of this world with terrain that easily compares to what you'd find at bigger resorts in the Rockies. My boys spend their d ..read more
