It’s late Sunday afternoon and we’ve been butchering the same whitetail since we woke up. This is the time-consuming part of hunting. This is when you realize just how much of a reward you earned from releasing that arrow or pulling the trigger. Wes had shot a beautiful buck just days before and it hung in the shed while we took our time processing the meat. Little Riley is asleep in his swing, milk-drunk and cozy. Sophie, on the other hand, is elbows deep in trimmed venison waiting to be washed & ground. Wes and I have kept her involved in all aspects of growing, cleaning, and processing ..read more

I met Liz Lazarus at SHOT Show in 2019 during the annual Women of the Gun event. As a writer of a different sort, we hit it off and she gave me a copy of her novel, Free of Malice. I devoured the book shortly after returning home. Years later, we got the chance to catch up when Liz agreed to be a guest on the Kat Haas Outdoors podcast. She also generously donated a set of her books to the Castle Rock chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for our annual banquet dinner and auction. Liz Lazarus lives in Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated from The Georgia Institute of Technology with an engine ..read more

A New Beginning!

It’s been a bit of a ride since the last time I sat down a wrote an article. The COVID-19 pandemic changed a lot of people’s lives, including mine. The world came to a screeching halt in March 2020. During that time, I continued working and we purchased our first house while interest rates were low. We began renovating our house on the 2nd day of owning it. Let me just tell you… Renovating a house from 1960, in a small town, during a pandemic where supplies are hard to get your hands on, is a challenge. But challenge or not, we kept pushing forward. Asking friends for help when we could get it ..read more

A Rifle for the Generations – Boyds’ Gunstocks At-One Thumbhole

Looking through that scope as you shoulder your rifle, taking aim at your target whether it be flesh or paper. Nothing replaces that feeling, especially when it’s your first rifle. There’s a connection between a hunter and their first rifle. If you got it when you were a kid, the stock was probably cut short so you could learn how to shoulder a gun properly. As you grew up, it became too short for you and you had to get different rifles to fit you. But what if you didn’t have to do that anymore? What if you could get one rifle and have it grow with you? So, I set out on a journey to bui ..read more

An Air Rifle for Adults – Umarex USA Gauntlet

When it comes to hunting small game, sometimes a traditional rifle does more damage than you expect. Maybe you live somewhere surrounded by neighbors who wouldn’t appreciate hearing .22s going off as you shoot rabbits out of your garden. Now there is a quieter solution! The Umarex USA Gauntlet air rifle! With the option to shoot 1 at a time or use a 10-round magazine, you can fill up that air tank using the Umarex USA PCP Hand Pump and shoot hundreds of pellets before needing to pump up again. I never thought I would even like shooting an air rifle. I always felt that they were meant fo ..read more

What’s Your Turkey Hunting Setup?
Kat Haas Outdoors

I decided I wanted to share a little about my personal turkey hunting set-up. Now, I know we all have our own opinions about what calls we should use or what type of vest we want. Do you blend in against a tree or do you put up a pop-up blind and sit knowing you can move around a little bit? Well, this is me and how I turkey hunt based on my gear. 1) Cabela’s Tactical Tat’r Turkey Vest I bought this vest on sale a few years ago because I didn’t have one for my 1st turkey hunt and I didn’t want to get caught in that situation again. Part of the reason I chose that particular vest is b ..read more

How to Assemble Umarex PCP Hand Pump
Kat Haas Outdoors

All the parts included in the kit. There are 2 ways to fill the air tank on PCP air rifles. The 1st is an air compressor. The 2nd is hand pumps. While hand pumps take longer, they allow you to use precise strokes and be more exact with the pressure in the tank. The particular hand pump I used comes in a flat box and you must assemble some parts of it. This is how to assemble the Umarex “SuperFill” PCP handpump. Lining up the holes to attach the feet. Step 1: Attach the feet I would consider attaching the feet to the pump as the 1st step as it allows you to use the feet to hold the ..read more
