We talk to Elyse Stindl about her ‘super dad’ and the family’s decision to honour Steven with an In Memory tribute. What is your connection to diabetes?  I live with type 1 diabetes and have since June 1992. This year marks 30 years and dad was particularly looking forward to celebrating this milestone with me. He shared with me in my adult years that when I was diagnosed he felt helpless and saw my life as one that hangs in the balance. Regardless, both my parents worked tirelessly at making sure my health and wellbeing was a priority whilst raising three children under three years of a ..read more

Stigma is real (not imagined) and complex, and can be either externally and or internally driven. External stigma may come from ‘well meaning’ family, friends and or health workers/ professionals, or the society an ..read more

Blood vessel and nerve damage due to ongoing ‘higher than target’ blood glucose levels cause diabetes complications. These complications can affect the whole body including the mind, however often they first show up in the feet. Every year there are over 4000 diabetes-related amputations in Australia, and unfortunately Indigenous Australians are three to six times more likely to experience diabetes-related foot complications compared to non-Indigenous Australians. Of these 4000 diabetes-related amputations, 85% are preventable if detected and managed early. Evidence-based culturally appropria ..read more

If I have diabetes can I fast?  Fasting is a commendable spiritual practice but it’s one that can come with major health risks for people living with diabetes. People living with type 2 diabetes who are treated with metformin, thiazolinediones, or diet alone and who have good blood glucose control are at low risk of complications with fasting. However, people living with type 1 diabetes and/or any person using insulin or oral sulphonylurea medications have a greater risk of fasting-related complications.
