Wow – it’s really been almost two years since the last time I sat down to write out my thoughts, in case anyone was looking for insight into my life. I’ve blogged for so long, this is something I do as long as I remember it. I usually don’t think about this blog half the time – that is, until I go through my Google Keep notes to find a list of blog topics I was supposed to write about 3 years ago. I’m always in awe of those who are so creative, write poems, go live, post a picture on a consistent basis. The only thing consistent about me is that I’ll most likely post something about trash astr ..read more

Last night, I created my first TikTok video. I laughed at myself and when I told my husband, he said, “Really?”  @kiks416 First time I do anything like this. Be kind! #vitiligomakeup #vitiligogoddess #vitiligonation #vitiligobeauty ♬ Paramaniac – Abby Roberts So this TikTok video — did you watch it? — is a culmination of lots of thoughts in the past few months about my vitiligo and ways to bring it to the forefront of conversations I’d been having and highlighting it in my pictures and social shares. I actually wanted to do a sort of art project with my face, highlighting the lack of pi ..read more

Ever have the thought, if I don’t do it now, I’m never going to? Yeah, well, that’s how I feel about writing this right now. If I didn’t do it now, I probably was going to wait another set of months to keep quiet. Well, here we are, 2 variants and a melt down later and really, nothing has changed. Wait – I’m wrong, things HAVE changed and I’m still unsure whether it’s for the better or worse right now. I’ve never been this much of a homebody, ever. I enjoy being home now. Change of scenery is hanging out in different parts of my house. Typically, I’m working on the second floor. Weekends we’re ..read more

I want you to get vaccinated against COVID-19

To say that this has been an easy year is … well, a lie. This past year has not been easy on so many different levels. My birthday is on Friday and I’ve been processing just how far we’ve come in the last 12 months. One thing that has been on my mind recently is getting vaccinated against COVID-19. Like the flu, you can still get COVID even if you are vaccinated, however, having the vaccine and antibodies in your system will help to alleviate any serious issues you may have, which is why getting it is so important. I’ve learned that getting COVID and it’s repercussions on the body is literally ..read more

How We’ve Changed in a Year
Diabetes Types A Blog

It’s really hard to think about everything that we went through in 2020. I remember the beginning of the year and thinking about everything that I had planned in my head for myself and for my family. This week last year, I planned to have a group of powerful women over to my house for brunch and talk on how we were going to conquer the world in front of us. I had planned to introduce all of those powerful women to my little lady, since she would’ve only been 7 months a year ago. I planned on having all my friends who had children around the same time I did over during the summer so our kids co ..read more

Before this shelter-in-place started in basically mid-March for us in Illinois, I decided that I wanted to start making changes. What did I want to change? Overall, I wanted to FEEL BETTER. But, what do you mean, Christina? What was wrong? Well, no one would really admit it but there were things that I realized I was allowing to happen to me. Yes, I was allowing it because I didn’t do anything to change them. Not in the past 2 years. After doing a Mama Master Plan workshop with my girl and number one Wild Mama, Tiffany, I realized I really had to prioritize my wants and needs because “you can ..read more

Generations of Diabetes

The posts and comments that I’ve seen a lot of during this National Diabetes Month have to do with passing judgement on other people, which we all know is something people take the liberty of doing behind the anonymity of their keyboards and computer screens. I’ve seen people talk about online bullying and how it ends up impacting their mental health. I’ve seen the judgement of people with Type 1 for being mistaken as type 2, which shouldn’t happen at all. And I’ve seen people judged for being type 2 as if it was their fault. Can we just clear something up here? Being type 2 is genetic. You ha ..read more

We’ve been in this game for 3 months now and wow! Can I just say, this is fun? It really is. To see this little person grow and learn, it’s absolutely amazing. We’ve made progress on sleeping, she knows who her parents are and she’s starting to talk and coo and communicate with those around her. It’s super cute. But as everything else goes, breastfeeding is not as easy as all those mom who overproduce make it look. They’re really the only ones sharing photos of their massive stashes of milk that they keep in the deep freezer. I’ve connected with other moms who produce like me, they make just e ..read more

I’ve been a mom for a month!

I’m back and there’s so much to tell! I’ve already been a mother for a month and as surreal as that sounds each time I type it up, it’s been an amazing experience thus far. So, where do I start? Let’s start at the beginning. I promise that I’ll be tying all of this back to diabetes in one way or another, because we all know, you can take the diabetes off the mind for a bit, but you can’t take it away from the body. Womp! I was supposed to be induced on August 3 at 8 a.m. However, it seemed that the baby didn’t want to wait that long, breaking my water on the morning of August 2, starting at 6 ..read more

Making the Best of a Mental Situation

Pregnant women do not have a disability. Pregnant women are fully capable of doing things for themselves. Pregnant women are strong; they are warriors. They are bringing the gift of life into the world. And ironically, it makes them vulnerable. It makes us vulnerable.  Besides my body changing and growing with this new human life, pregnancy isn’t just physical, especially for those of us with diabetes. It becomes mental and psychological, even behavioral because quite literally everything we do has an impact on our blood sugars and an impact on our baby. If blood sugars spike for no reason, as ..read more
