Squash the Sponge to Start Down

One of the most common questions asked about the golf swing is how best to start my downswing? The change over from backswing to downswing is referred to as the transition and what most people will agree with is that it is an important part of the swing in terms of efficient creation and use of power particularly in the timing of the swing. Movement of our weight is a three-dimensional concept but sometimes in simpler terms can be measured in relation to how we act against the ground both laterally and rotationally. Using this simple feeling of lateral weight transfer we can create triggers li ..read more

Stressful Golf

Golf psychology in broad definition could be described as how our behaviour through our emotions and thoughts relate to our performance. I used to think this was the absolute key to determining whether I would perform the level I wanted. In other words, performance outcomes are often judged on how effective the psychological skills are that there was some kind of magic moment I would find the answer to unlock any potential. This I assumed must be what the best players had done and once you find it these psychological obstacles are forever removed. However, the reality is there are several thin ..read more

General Putting Thoughts

A lot of golfers would like to be better players, but for all those who are motivated by this a good number will not have a plan of where or how this improvement could be made. Putting is one of those areas that rather than formulating good strategies for improvement, so often people move from quick fix to quick fix, this cycle can lead all too easily to frustration, confusion and in some case regression. Because putting is an area that is perhaps a lot more individual in terms of method than other parts of the game it’s easy to feel that answers can be found ad hock. For example we might deci ..read more

Hitting the middle

The question “how do I hit it further with my driver?” is a common query. In truth it comes down to a number of factors and most of these will be individual like ranges of motion, swing path, leverage influences, spin rates and so on. Although these sorts of things affect everybody’s driving length how they are used by individuals varies substantially. One of the major factors in how far we hit the ball is how fast the clubhead is traveling through the impact area. However increasing ones clubhead speed may not give you more distance if it is not used efficiently. One of the characteristics of ..read more

Syncing the move away

The golf swing can be looked at from an effective viewpoint and also from an efficiency point of view – this is the latter. In truth this is one of those articles that clearly will not apply to everyone who plays golf for a number of reasons however I think it is worth asking yourself how this move applies to you. Reasons why it varies can be to do with poor posture and grip at address, or certain physical restrictions or limitations in the shoulder control. (A lot of juniors will swing the club on too much around the body to begin with because of natural lack of control in the shoulder area ..read more

Using the driving range

Using the golf practice range has come in for criticism in recent years from certain areas, especially the typical covered driving range. Comments like “you don’t see other sports training on areas that don’t mimic the playing ground” have been used to level some disparagement at golf’s traditional training methods, however this comment is just not true. Also comments like “it doesn’t resemble the golf course so you can’t learn to PLAY golf there” may have some truth if taken literally but it doesn’t mean we won’t benefit our golf by using the range. After all probably all the great players ha ..read more

I am sure many of you regular golfers feel like it’s an absolute age since you last played golf. I have talked to several players and quite a lot have not picked a club up over this period of lockdown. So, what sort of things should we look out for in relation to our game’s sharpness. I would think that most of us will be just delighted to be out on the links again but the competitive juices can kick in quite quickly and the enjoyment perspective can easily be overshadowed by the expectations of ourselves in playing sport. Even though we will be playing social golf, this competitive inner sel ..read more

Some Check Points for Distance

Watching any golfer competing at the best levels should show you that mastery of the short game is still one of the most important elements that need to be in place to be successful in the game. However Stats are now showing that driving distance is also a factor. How much of a factor it is in club golf can be argued but I would say it is something that most golfers give some consideration to. In truth optimising and improving our driving distance can come down to looking at a number of factors such as the angle our club approaches the ball at, our centeredness of impact, our equipment may be ..read more

Firm Foundations in Putting

One of the most common tips heard around golf is “keep your head still”. I have said previously that in the full swing that this thought can be detrimental to the use of momentum and power that should be one of our aims in the full swing. However when it comes to the putting stroke its one thought that can be very useful. In putting the head movement can be detrimental for two reasons. If we are simply moving the head so we can see then sometimes this movement affects the shoulder and chest alignment resulting in our stroke and putter head coming off line. The other reason the head moves is be ..read more
