Hope for the Holidays Half Marathon Race Recap

It looks like it’s been a while since my last race recap… One year to be exact! It’s been a crazy year and apparently it didn’t include blogging.  I did race a few times at the start of 2020 but never got around to writing about it. I decided I needed to come out of my blog retirement for this one. It isn’t everyday I get to run a half marathon with one of my kids! I have done it once before, back in 2017 with Abi on her 13th birthday. We found a half marathon we did together but none of my other kids have been interested in starting a birthday run tradition. This race sort of c ..read more

St. Jude Memphis Marathon 2019

It’s hard to begin a recap of such an amazing race experience so I’ll do my best.  The short version is that the St. Jude Memphis Marathon was a combination of many years of hard work, a strong support system, being in the right place at the right time and a whole lot of God. There’s really no other way to describe it. No doubt I trained hard for my time but placement always comes down to who shows up on any given day. God has given me much more than I ever deserve and I am so thankful that I am still able to run and compete during this time in my life. The long version… In October I ran ..read more

Full Moon 25k- the Masters edition
Arkansas Runner Mom

It’s no secret that this summer I’ve been focused on speed and shorter distances. I probably had no business registering for a long trail race but there’s something about this race that brings me back each year.  This was actually my first trail race since running Full Moon last year! I usually run a few more in the spring and summer but I’ve been so focused on 1 mile and 5k training that I didn’t want to risk injury or throw off my training.  Since my “season” technically ended July 4th I figured I could use Full Moon as a long training run before I start marathon training. It’s rea ..read more

The Heat Was Definitely On 8K

In my masters series quest one of the more obscure distance records is the 8k. I think it falls under the same category as the 12k and 20k. They are not very common these days- especially compared to the ever popular 5k, 10k, or half marathon. There used to be a popular 8k race in Little Rock (Rock Run) but it hasn’t been around in a few years. I ran Rock Rock a few times in its final years and always thought it was great course along Rebsamen and the River Trail. On a fairly flat course in decent weather (honestly anything mid 70’s or below) I knew the 8k record was doable. The time to beat w ..read more

Firecracker Fast 5k- a PR Surprise!

The Firecracker Fast 5k is truly a race that lives up to its name! The first time I ran it in 2013 I had no idea what to expect and it did not disappoint.  It’s a fast point to point race with a lot of downhill in the first 2 miles.  I love downhill racing but unfortunately there are not many races like this around here.  The first time I ran this course I finished in 17:52- my first sub 18! Since that time I’ve run in dozens of 5k’s but never came close to that time…  Until this year. Firecracker Fast 5k (Little Rock, AR) Thursday, July 4, 2019 Pre Race John dropped me off ..read more

Quick Race Update- Capital City Classic 10k and the Wildcat Extra Mile
Arkansas Runner Mom

Capital City Classic 10k The running theme this spring has been “just go with it.” For a number of reasons I’ve learned to be more flexible and remember no race plan is set in stone. For example, the first Saturday of April has always been the Capital City Classic 10k in Little Rock.  I’ve run this race every year since 2012.  This year it was scheduled for 5 PM so all week I braced myself for a warm, muggy 10k. We arrived in plenty of time for the race and after I picked up my chip and bib I started to get ready to warm up.  It was raining and was supposed to rain the rest of t ..read more

2 Races & 2 Records- Arkansas Runner 2 Mile & Go! Mile 2019

This masters series quest has taught me a lot these past 6 months. It’s been challenging, fun, and extremely motivating. When you’re chasing state records there are a few things to consider: 1.) Races need to be in state and certified. 2.) There are some race distances you only get one or two shots at a year. There are plenty of 5k’s and 10ks, half and full marathons but some of the distances are few and far between. When I prepared for the River Trail 15k in in February I knew if I didn’t get the time I needed I’d have to wait another full year to try again. (Fortunately I made it!) It defini ..read more

Inaugural Grand Prix Track Meet

Racing the day after a long road trip is not ideal. Last year I tried to race a 5k after a day long car ride home from Disney and 5 hours of sleep. The key word there was tried.  I felt decent for about one mile and it was pure torture after that. It went from 5k pace to marathon pace to just finish. We arrived home shortly after midnight Thursday night and fortunately had all day Friday to recover. The Inaugural Grand Prix Track Meet was Saturday, May 25 in Cabot and I was one of the event organizers so I needed to be there.  I knew it would be tough to race this soon after returnin ..read more

Mystic 10k and my favorite running vacation route

A few weeks ago we took a 9 day family vacation road trip to the Northeast and had a great time.  We went to Pennsylvania, NYC, Connecticut, West Point and Cooperstown, NY, and finally Niagra Falls. We planned this trip months ago and when I gave my sister the dates of our trip (specifically the days we would be at her house) she went ahead and registered me for a race! The race she picked was the Mystic 10k.  It is put on by the Hartford Marathon Foundation and she had run it a few times in the past.  There is a half marathon that begins at the same time but she preferred the 1 ..read more

Missing a Marathon, running in a college track meet and Doc Rock Half Marathon- Take 2!

It’s been a while… Not really sure where to pick up so I guess the best place to start is with Little Rock.  (Feel free to skip ahead to brighter days!)  Missing the Little Rock Marathon was crushing.  It’s been almost 7 weeks now and I’ve definitely moved on but the first few weeks were tough. I trained for months for this race and I really wanted that fourth win. (One for each of my kids.)  Six days before the marathon my youngest son tested positive for the flu.  A few days later my oldest daughter started running fever.  I did my very best to stay healthy with ..read more
