Last year when I finished racing Ironman Emilia Romagna my husband let me know that for 2018 a full distance Ironman was not to be put on the calendar. Ironman training takes a lot of family time too. He did however approve a half Ironman so I looked for the most exciting and challenging one I could find: Ironman 70.3 in Nice, France. It was a new race and will be the venue for the 2019 70.3 World Championships. I looked at the course and saw that the bike portion would be very challenging. It climbed into the hills, passing over the Col de Vence at 1000 meters above sea level. Total climbing e ..read more

Last year Shauna and I met in Amsterdam to have a brainstorming session. We both really enjoy taking ourselves out of our everyday surroundings to switch up thought patterns and get the ideas flowing. That particular afternoon called for Mexican food. Nothing like a good burrito washed down with a vanilla horchata to help out with the creative process! We have a dozen Google Docs filled with ideas, so our biggest issue is always… which idea to choose? Our thought process went something like this: One our dear Up & Runnersm Tessa, lives near Rotterdam so she travelled up to join us. She ki ..read more

Last week I went to spend a week with my father in California for his 86th birthday. Since I live in Italy it’s quite a trek for me to get there and back, but it’s totally worth it. I love having quality time with him, it’s always an intense week together. I’ve been doing this for a few years now so we have a sort of routine worked out. The places we love to go browse through, Christmas shopping for my family, the restaurants he likes to eat at. I also have my personal routine too. My transcontinental flight always arrives in the early afternoon and I arrive at his house just in time for an ea ..read more

Julia’s Ironman Emilia Romagna Race Report

In the weeks leading up to Ironman Emilia Romagna I was nervous without knowing why. I kept asking myself why I should do this race if the mental preparation was going to crush me. The training was going well, but the summer heat just never seemed to end. Training in August, when I had the most mileage, was the hardest. I struggled with perpetual fatigue that would not go away. If they’d told me they’d changed the date of the race to August 20th I would have said yes, I’m ready to do this. I was that tired of swimming, cycling and running. But in September, the weather took a cooler down. Sept ..read more

If you don’t like running

Yesterday as I was doing some social media scrolling I came upon a paid Facebook advertisement that caught my eye. It was a targeted advertisement about a running app. I was only able to snap a screenshot but I wish you could have seen it. It featured two semi-deranged looking, well endowed young women in front of a green screen with a row of treadmills  projected onto the backdrop. What caught my eye was the very first phrase in the advertisement: “For someone who doesn’t like to run, this app is great…” This is going to be a short post here because my only message is this: If you don’t ..read more

How to run faster

In the last year there have been a lot of trending articles in the fitness world on what the experts now consider to be the best way to stay fit and in shape. It’s hard to keep up with their ever changing minds! One year they advice us all to practice yoga, and the next year slow walking down dirt paths in nature is the new nirvana. But lately I’ve seen the experts in the different sports spheres agree on one practice: running for brief duration at a very intense speed. In other words, running fast. Most beginner runners tend to train at a running speed that is well within their comfort zone ..read more

Coach Julia Goes To Boston: A marathon on zero mileage

Remember in February when I mentioned that I’d had the flu three times since Christmas? That I was signed up to run the Boston Marathon and would just forge on with two months of training to go? Well, that plan got chucked out the window when I got a fever again at the end of March,  just three weeks before the race. I can’t say why this was happening; it still baffles me. To make sure that it really was just a crappy immune system my doctor had me do every blood and urine test possible and everything checked out fine. Thank goodness. So consulting with my dear husband and ..read more

“Non c’è due senza tre”

“Non c’è due senza tre” is an Italian proverb which means if you do something twice you’re bound to do it a third time. Yesterday I signed up for my third Ironman, IM Cervia in Italy. There are a few long distance triathlons in Italy, one is even really well organised which is kind of a shocker for this country. But this will be the first Ironman brand (®!) long distance race and I wanted to be a part of it. It took me awhile to sign up and I didn’t get the push to do it until I saw they were at 80% capacity.  If I wanted to be at the starting line in September I needed to get that ..read more

When runners sign up for my 1-on-1 coaching they first fill out a questionnaire that tells me all sorts of information. Even the way they fill it out, the number of words or the choice of nouns, verbs and adjectives clues me into their personality. But what I’m mostly interested in discovering is their past, present and future. What kind of sports did they play when they were young? Have they always been active? What did their running programme look like last week? What’s their goal in the near (or far) future? All this information tells me where they have been, where ..read more

My 56th birth day

I have to admit that before I turned 56 yesterday I was feeling a little bit Debbie Downer about the whole day. It wasn’t a number I was particularly excited about and I hadn’t yet picked out any special gift for myself so I had nothing to really look forward to. But then I told myself to get my freaking head back into the right place. It was and is a privilege to be able to celebrate another year on Planet Earth. I love this place and I love my life so what is there not to be totally amped up and excited about? My new plan was to just go on with my day as usual and enjoy the si ..read more
