The AOI was established in 1973 to advance and protect illustrator's rights and encourage professional standards.

The Association of Illustrators is dedicated to protecting the rights of illustrators amidst the evolving AI regulations by the UK government. We have been actively contributing towards regulatory discussions through our work with Creator’s Rights Alliance and the British Copyright Council, as well as submitting several written responses to government, to ensure that the voices of our members are heard. The London Book Fair has been a long time supporter of The AOI and The World Illustration Awards, and they are our current sponsor for the Book Covers Category for WIA2024.
This year we were delighted to work with LBF 2024 as a host for the WIA2023 Touring Exhibition, which was shown from 12-14 March in Olympia, London. The work shown included the 24 Category and Cross Category Winners of WIA2023.
The exhibition was a great success and well received by visitors to LBF 2024.

The Awards are now closed for submissions. Thank you to everyone who entered their wonderful work and our partners and sponsors for spreading the word. The Awards team will check entries before the jury gets going with their difficult task of selecting the 500 longlisted projects, 200 shortlisted and 44 winners which we will announce from late May.

The longlist for the 2024 Klaus Flugge Prize is announced today – the only award specifically to recognise a published picture book by a debut illustrator; the winning illustrator receives a cheque for £5,000.
Established in 2016, the Prize is awarded to the most promising and exciting newcomer to children’s picture book illustration. It honours Klaus Flugge, founder of publisher Andersen Press and a supremely influential figure in picture books.

We are delighted to announce that this year the WIA2023 Touring Exhibition will be shown at 3 venues in the UK, starting with The University of Hertfordshire!
The WIA2023 Touring Exhibition opens at the University of Hertfordshire on the 23rd February
2024, with free entry to all.

The Exhibition gives an insight into the world of illustration and features the WIA2023 Category and Cross Category winners, as well as the Highly Commended projects from WIA2023.

Chinese New Year is always a very visual occasion, and for 2024 the Isle of Man Post Office commissioned AOI member Jo Davies to create four illustrations for a new set of stamps, in celebration of Chinese New Year.
An Isle of Man resident, Jo was delighted to be asked to create the stamp designs, “Illustrating a set of stamps has been on my bucket list, especially one celebrating such a revered symbol. It’s an honour to represent the Year of the Dragon through art.” The set illustrate the story of the four dragons, which are said to have created the four great rivers of China.

We regularly commission new cover designs for the AOI Client Directories, and loving her 3D images and animation, we asked AOI Member Eva Münnich to come up with some fun characters to grace our digital publications.
The Directories are a convenient and affordable reference source for illustrators sending out samples of work to commissioners. They include details of mainly UK commissioners (some outside the UK) interested in sourcing illustration for the Advertising, Editorial and Publishing sectors.

DACS’ annual Payback scheme pays illustrators, artists and photographers royalties for the reuse of their images that have been published in UK books, magazines or on TV. From, for example, photocopying by schools, universities and companies.
This year they have £5 million to distribute. Sign up now and claim your share of royalties.
Last year, DACS paid over 92,000 artists, illustrators and photographers a share of £5.2 million in royalties. Individual payments were up to £357 for books and magazines and over £2,000 when also claiming for TV.
