One of my main interests over the last five years has been in quantitative investing. The main trigger for it came to be because I could feel that a lot of investment outcomes are dependent on the whimsical nature of human psychology, so a better way to address this problem is to be able to codify some rules for investing. This approach has helped me immensely in my discretionary long-term investing as well. So, starting this month we are going to publish a quant newsletter. We will try to make it monthly (at least that is what we have thought for now). It will be only and only focused on qua ..read more

This week I will deviate from the set pattern. I will start with a video. I would recommend you view this multiple times. It is only about 17 mins so even if you watch it 4 times, it will be roughly an hour. Some of the greatest advice for investors from one of the best investors ever. Let me highlight some of the key concepts he has spoken about and try to articulate why they are critical. Invest, then investigate If I get an idea and I think it’s attractive for whatever reason . . . I generally go ahead and buy it, and then tell the analysts to poke holes ..read more

Service of the Month: This month we talk about Hitpicks, which is the technofunda based positional trading service from Intelsense. Why Hitpicks? Dr Hitesh Patel and I have been working together and collaborating in personal investing for a long time. I have always been a long-term-oriented investor who was more interested in compounding and growth stocks. During my many conversations with Hitesh Bhai (that’s what everyone calls him), I started appreciating the nuances of market dynamics which led me to technical analysis (and subsequently to quantitative analysis, but that’s a stor ..read more

In investing, I have grown to have a dual personality :-) In my first avatar, I keep looking for long term, quality, compounding stories that can give above average returns over very long periods. These tend to end up as the proverbial multibaggers after a few years. In the second avatar, I look for returns from short cycles using quantitative models, technical analysis or special situations. While hunting for the long-term growth stocks, I have come to realise that we need to, sometimes, give what I call breathing space to the businesses. Businesses cannot keep delivering high grow ..read more

We are again at that time of the year when people don their thinking hats and reflect on the year gone by. As an investor, I find it very important to reduce my regular investment work and go back and think about what went right and what could be improved upon. This last week, I actually was inspired by the “Think Week” ritual that Bill Gates used to have. Unlike Gates, I did not go off to a reclusive lake-side retreat all by myself. But I did reduce a lot of my regular work and went back to my pen and diary (sometimes OneNote journal) to look back and also to look forward. 2022 - Th ..read more
