Life has changed for so many people in the past couple of years. Including us. During the pandemic, we sheltered at our property in Washington and were joined by our dear friends Matt & Diana. During their visit, Matt helped us install our dream electrical system. After a long winter on our property, we discovered that our water heater had a leak and damaged the vinyl. We brought the trailer to Ultimate Airstream in Portland and replaced the floor and installed a tankless hot water heater. While we waited for the repair, we stayed in a few Airbnb’s. This also coincided with a big change in ..read more

Early last month our county moved into phase 2 re-opening and outside gatherings of 5 non-family members were allowed. When I mentioned this to our friend Lisa (who was feeling a bit stir-crazy from the lockdown), she immediately jumped at the opportunity to visit in their Airstream. While they were here, I convinced them to model the shirts, hat and hoodie that are being sold during the 6th Annual Campendium Fundraiser (which just kicked off yesterday ..read more

Trailhead Camping

Since we had to hitch up to dump and with a week to go until internet was installed – we realized that we could probably find a place to camp near our property with better cell reception. Brian and Marshall went out scouting and found a great campsite in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. We camped there for a week, and the only person we saw during our stay was a ranger who came to restock the vault toilet ..read more

2 Months & Counting

It’s been exactly two months since we arrived on our property. I had a lot of anxiety at the time – unsure if we were making the right decision coming north. Did we pick the right place to go? Would we be safe there? Should we let Marshall come in our trailer? Would we be carriers of this disease? I certainly didn’t want to be responsible for bringing COVID to our county. Two months in, we’re healthy and I’m a little less anxious but no less cautious. I nag the guys every time they leave the property to be safe – just because we’re remote we can’t get complacent. Did we pick the right place to ..read more

The weather has improved in the past week and our evening walks through fields of brown dead grass have changed to fields of yellow flowers. Our neighbors Sam and Jan are avid daily hikers and dropped off this awesome map of the neighborhood trails yesterday. I love how it includes everyone’s name and if they have dogs ..read more

Settling In

With over 40% of campgrounds closed and shelter-in-place orders in effect, Marshall is coming to terms with putting the breaks on nomadic life and hanging out with us for the foreseeable future. But rather than think about that too much, we have things to figure out. Like the internet. Maybe if we raise it higher…? Shortly after that, one of us noticed that the antenna was moving quite a bit in the wind, and since the cell tower is REALLY far away, perhaps stabilizing it would help. Indeed it did, however, every now and then, it still craps out on us at which point we have to find a diversion ..read more

Rural Internet

Our first order of business has been getting internet back up and running on our property. In the past we’ve had success with our directional antenna, but upon our return, we could only get a 3G signal. We swapped out the booster with the Weboost 4G-X and it still didn’t make a difference. We are able to get a 4G signal with Marshall’s directional and our Mimo antenna, but it isn’t good enough to work from, so Friday we bit the bullet and ordered satellite internet from HughesNet ..read more

The Long Haul Home

Even though we travel full-time in our Airstream, we technically have a home in Washington state where we own 20 acres of land. With the number of campground and public land closures increasing daily, and shelter-in-place orders in most states, we figured our best option was to go “home.” Initially, we thought perhaps we’d take our time and spend a month or so making the trip, but in recent days it became clear that for our safety and for the safety of the communities we would be driving through, we needed to get to our property ASAP and not expose ourselves along the way. We ended up doing th ..read more

Sheltering in Place

We’re learning all kinds of new phrases these days. From social distancing to sheltering in place, life has become a bit unnerving, to say the least. Currently, we’re boondocking with friends and are limiting our interactions. We aren’t going inside each other’s rigs, but are going on evening walks together. Yesterday we didn’t go out due to the rain, but tonight I think we’re finally going to start adhering to the 6 feet rule. We’ve been monitoring state by state campground closures for Campendium and are seeing that even BLM is being closed in some locations, so we’ve decided it makes the mo ..read more

Hiding out in the Desert

Last week we spent camping in Las Cienegas National Conservation Area. I had a feeling it was going to be a bit busy due to the number of posts I had seen on Instagram recently and the number of reviews coming in on Campendium. First we tried Cieneguita Camping Area, but all the spots were taken, so we ended up at Maternity Well Group Site (pictured). Anyone can camp at the group sites until a permitted group shows up and BLM permits are only required for groups over 29 people (there was only 14 in ours). Mid-week a group with a permit showed up forcing us to move to the nearby Airstrip Group ..read more
