New Star Kebab, Auburn

We went out on a limb one lazy Sunday afternoon and decided we'd drive to Auburn for lunch. We didn't quite know where we were going to eat, but we did know that we felt like a Middle Eastern feast. Driving through the main shopping strip, our attention was caught by the crowds outside New Star Kebab - we knew this was a place that we just had to try.  The atmosphere at New Star Kebab during at lunchtime is lively, and almost chaotic. There's smoke billowing out from the chargrill onto the street, diners queuing out the front, and waiters ferrying plates piled high with soft turki ..read more

Nobu, Melbourne

It's the name that's almost instantly recognisable as an icon of Japanese cuisine. The Melbourne location of the famed restaurant empire is one of only two places in Australia where you can sample Nobu Matsuhisa's internationally renowned 'new style' Japanese cooking, so you can bet that we had our sights on dining at this place on a recent trip to the city. Nobu sits on the ground floor of the majestic Crown Casino, overlooking the Yarra River. It is one of  the more sophisticated restaurants you can dine at in the opulent, multi-storey Crown complex, which  also has its very o ..read more

Burger Heaven at Happy Ending, Concord

Happy Ending may just be the answer to all of your burger needs. The takeaway joint takes over the space of what used to be a family fish and chip shop on the main strip of Concord's Majors Bay Road; a hole in the wall space that fits a row of indoor counter seats and just a handful of tables outside. The team running this hot burger joint is the same as the one behind the infamous Mister Gee's burger truck. This is their first bricks-and-mortar store, so you can imagine the crowds that have flocked to sample what could be one of the best burgers in the inner west. The interior is remi ..read more

Salmon and Bear, Newtown

The name Salmon and Bear conjures mixed signals about the food that the restaurant serves. Does the menu revolve around fish (the 'Salmon' component), or does it have more of a hunter-gather wilderness theme (the 'Bear')? Or does it go surf and turf and offer both? The answer is in the 'Salmon' part of the name. Salmon and Bear relies on the humble fish as the hero and main focus of the menu. The fish that they source is sustainably caught and cooked simply. It's grilled in the eatery's hot Mirabasa oven, fried, or served raw, and features in burgers, tacos, poke bowls, as well as their ..read more

Three Williams, Redfern

I'd have sandwiches every day for lunch without fail when I was a kid. As a result, because I'd eaten so many, sandwiches have since lost their sense of appeal and I've tended to shy away from them as a lunchtime option. But then along came the narnie.  The narnie is Three Williams' specialty. It's a naan sandwich that is served gua bao style; fluffy, soft naan bread folded over a handful of tasty, ingeniously constructed fillings. It's an innovative creation that combines all the best of the humble naan bread and old faithful lunchtime sandwich. The naan acts as the perfect base fo ..read more

The first time we visited Harold Park's gentrified Tramsheds complex was during the first month of opening, and the space was teeming with masses of crowds who were eager to get a piece of the Inner West's newly-restored food destination. It was, in all honesty, quite a stressful experience because it was just so busy. Re-visiting the space earlier this month, after the opening crowds had dissipated, was a much more pleasant affair. It's a great place to catch up with friends on the weekend, have a lazy brunch or long lunch, or pick up some Messina gelato. There are loads to places to ea ..read more

Balcon By Tapavino is the kind of place where you'd happily spend a lazy Friday afternoon. Order some share plates, a glass of wine and graze your way into the weekend.  The outdoor terrace area at the back of the restaurant conduces this relaxing, laid-back feeling, while the warmly-lit dining areas inside are cosy. Run by the same team as Spanish tapas restaurant Bar Tapavino, much of the menu is laid out in Spanish. There is something for every appetite, with individually portioned tapas, jamon boards, and a mix of smaller and large plates. There's a good chance you haven't had ..read more

China Doll, Woolloomoolloo

Being of Chinese heritage, we don't go out to eat at Chinese restaurants as often as one might think. I'm a big fan of the cheap, no-frills Chinese restaurant for a good noodle feed or family yum cha, however we seldom dine at restaurants on the higher end of the price spectrum. But the iconic China Doll is no ordinary Chinese restaurant, so when time came to choose at place at which to celebrate my birthday recently, I knew that that was where I wanted to go. Situated on the finger wharves with tranquil harbour views, the restaurant is spread over two levels with an extensive amount o ..read more

Fancy a cup of tea and warm scones with jam and cream? The Tea Cosy is just the place to satisfy your afternoon tea cravings. Nestled in an old terrace house in The Rocks, The Tea Cosy is a cafe that retains an old-fashioned charm. The interior has hardly been touched in converting the house into a functioning cafe, with tables wedged into nooks and crannies around the two-level space.  It's the perfect place to chat over a hot cup of freshly-brewed tea and a basket of scones. The decor might just be borrowed from your grandma's house, complete with hand-knitted tea cosies, doilie ..read more

This dumpling eatery has cemented a spot in our hearts as one of our favourite dumpling places of all time. If you haven't heard of Yang's Dumpling before, then be you'll be itching to try their dumplings by the end of this post. The pan fried pork buns at Yang's are things of beauty. They're the dumplings you absolutely must try, best described as a marvellous hybrid of the Shanghainese pan-fried pork bun, only with more filling and a thinner outer casing. The inside is bursting with a hot soup that threatens to spray out everywhere upon first bite. The bottom has the most gorgeous golden ..read more
