We planned to do a section of the Trans Canada Trail that stretched from Cultus Lake to Castlegar, including the BC Trail and the Kettle Valley Railroad (KVR). We would be doing nearly 800km over nine days, almost entirely on trails and gravel. Unlucky for us, the 2021 Heatdome that baked the PNW overlapped with our entire trip. By the last day, we were cycling in temperature approaching 40 degrees Celcius.
After getting a ride out to Cultus lake we both started setting up our bikes in a nearby parking lot.
The first section of the trail was a fairly easy logging road with some lingering we ..read more

We started around 9 am from the parking lot. I didn't know this until just a few days before but you are allowed bikes on this particular trail. Our friend brought his e-mountain bike, which made short work of the trail.
We were treated to a small waterfall only a couple of km into the trail.

Despite the winter-like scenery, it was very hot t ..read more

To access the Lake Lovely Water trailhead, you must cross the Squamish River. We hired a boat to take us across, which only took 15 min for the two trips.
Once on the other side you follow a flagged/marked trail. It’s easy to miss the occasional flagging though, so it’s a good idea to download a GPS track of the trail to avoid getting lost.

We started at the base of the Sunshine Ski Hill, just outside of Banff.
You have the option of hiking up the ski out trail or pay to take the gondola up. We choose to take the gondola as we had heard the hike up the ski out was a fairly boring gravel road. It’s also discounted if you’re doing the trail one way and exiting at Mount Shark.
It was interesting seeing the ski hill in the sum ..read more
