What we eat – and what our kids eat – affects so much in life: appearance, energy, cognition, focus, mood, how often we get sick, how quickly we get better, how likely we are to develop a chronic disease, and how we age. Every bite of food is either an investment in our future, a new debt we are taking out, or some of both. There are many ways to enjoy the benefits of real food. One healthy way of eating that has been studied a lot is the Mediterranean diet, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, fish, herbs, spices, and olive oil. Red meats, processed foods, and ..read more

Here are five things I think parents should look for in their children’s medical records and have at their fingertips: BMI Percent – Parents are often stunningly wrong about whether or not their children are at a healthy weight. We are so familiar with our kids that they often look normal to us even when they are not. And more than 75% of parents of overweight children aged 2 to 15 report never being told the child is overweight by the pediatrician. The Body Mass Index is a calculation that looks at appropriate weight for height for a given age and gender. If children’s BMI is below the 5th pe ..read more

A recent study showed that there is a 43% increase in autoimmune diseases in the months following a COVID infection. And autoimmune diseases among kids were already on the rise. The question becomes how best to guard against COVID and the long tail of impact on children.  With some vaccines, it can be important for the whole community to take them because they help prevent transmission and help prevent the vulnerable among us from becoming infected. The COVID booster is a bit different than that. It decreases transmission little if any. It does boost antibodies for a period of time, it ma ..read more

One of my favorite gadgets from the pandemic is the AraNet 4 CO2 monitor. I carry it with me whenever I am curious about an indoor space. This easy-to-use monitor gives a simple red-yellow-green reading of the CO2 level. At a green level (<1000 ppm) it is harder to transmit an airborne viral infection. At a red level (>1400 ppm) it is much easier to catch a virus if someone else in the room is sick. I use this in restaurants and on airplanes, for instance, to help guide my actions. As a bonus, CO2 levels also correlate with alertness and productivity. When CO2 levels drift into the yello ..read more

Here is my guide to toy selection. I hope it helps you with your shopping.  Categories of Healthy Toys Before making your toy selection, let’s discuss healthy categories of toys. Especially in this digital age, it is important to remember the value of play without the use of media or devices. In 2019, the journal Pediatrics published a report on how to select appropriate and safe toys in this digital era.  The report discussed the concern that electronic toys were replacing more traditional children’s toys. Although we know there is a place for healthy use of electronics, in thi ..read more

Added sugar is one of the biggest problems not only in kids’ diets but in the American diet overall. Added sugar is fueling the childhood obesity epidemic. But our childhood obesity problems start well before school age. In fact, it starts before most babies are even walking. By 9 months old, 30% of American babies are overweight — not just chubby, but they have too many fat cells and sugar in infant formula is one of the reasons. What is sugar even doing in infant formula? Great question. The sugars naturally found in foods can be beneficial. It may surprise you to find that one of the p ..read more
