Travel Handmade: Packing For A Trip Someone Else Planned

I was born in Germany in the mid-70s. What an awesome time to be a baby duck in Europe, you know? I have this hypothesis that we all imprint on a particular taste level & design aesthetic based on what we see during our earliest years, and for me it was Danish modern and bohemian couture. I’ve been grateful every day since. Looking back at old photos, it’s basically my entire ouvre, I mean, the colors & shapes & silhouettes. Come on. Because my life started overseas, and because my family was military, I’ve lived other places besides the US. That must have done something to mask m ..read more

My Sewing Goals For 2024

I was already thinking about what I MOST want to focus on while sewing this year, but reviewing my 2023 makes really got me thinking. Sewing with a FOCUS rather than a goal has given me a much better selection of finished garments that are my first choice when getting dressed. That satisfaction is motivation to keep doing what I’m doing and sew based on habits that come from what I BELIEVE about sewing, rather than with some arbitrary list in mind. My Sewing Philosophy I want my clothes to fit me. I also want them to SUIT me. They should be made for the body I have today, not my “dream” body ..read more

How I Sewed More Than 40 Garments For Myself Last Year: 2023 Sewing Year In Review

Over the course of 2023, I sewed a grand total of FORTY garments for myself. That’s INSANE. I can say, with almost total confidence, that I have never done that much sewing in a single year for myself–and also that I didn’t fully INTEND to do that much sewing in a single year, not even in 2023. Watch The Video A little over a year ago, I saw a sewing influencer on TikTok (yes, I know exactly how that sounds, and yes, it’s still completely true, she actually also has a YouTube channel) do a similar post to this one (you can see hers here, and another I loved in Jan 2023 right here). My first t ..read more

Emerson Dress from Style Arc, in floral rayon

This is the Emerson Dress from Style Arc, sewn up in a dreamy soft rayon. I have worn this dress every single time it comes out of the wash, and it’s always the right choice. I feel sad that the weather is turning and I won’t wear it as often soon–but maybe if I put it over a pair of skinny jeans and a long-sleeve tee? I hear the 90s are coming back (also, this link lists that as an early-00s trend, but I know for a stone cold fact that I was wearing little rayon dresses over baggy jeans in 1996 and feeling like a baller). One of the best parts about the way this dress feels is that it’s EASY ..read more

Montana Dress from Style Arc: When You Want A Super Versatile Dress For Everything

I needed a simple, pull-over style dress for one of the days during our recent visit to Greece. We started our day driving away from Athens (srsly not for the faint of heart, ugh, what a tough town for driving) and heading west, toward Corinth. Over the former-isthmus-now-canal at Corinth, we headed to Epidaurus, which is NOT the very, very famous ampitheather at Epidavros, above, but rather a teeeeeeensy tiny little spot on the coast, where I was assured we would find an underwater sunken city of ancient origins which we could snorkel. We found it, it was amazing, we were basically the only ..read more

I love Agatha Christie movies. There doesn’t seem to be any version of Poirot or Miss Marple that I don’t enjoy watching (although Branagh wasn’t my favorite, TBH). So when I visit ancient sites, I confess that in the back of my mind, I’m almost always fantasizing at least a little of being in an Agatha Christie story, 1920s-1930s naturally, with all the fabulous clothes that go along with such a vision. When we visited the Acropolis in Athens, Greece I did the same thing–to the point that even before we left, I was picturing just what I wanted to be wearing on the day we climbed to the top o ..read more

Striped Breton Adrienne Blouse from Friday Pattern Company

I love sewing knit tops, and I’m always excited when I find a pattern that’s JUST different enough from a basic tee to give it a place in my wardrobe. Add in a “statement” sleeve and I’m all in. This is the Adrienne Blouse from Friday Pattern Co. I wouldn’t call it a “blouse,” it’s definitely a “top” more than a “blouse,” but I love it all the same. The neckline especially grabbed me when I first saw the design. I love the way it’s shaped, but also the elastic that helps maintain the line so it doesn’t droop. Our family traveled to Greece this summer, and I took the top with me and wore it to ..read more

Gilbert Top by Helen’s Closet, in white linen

I made the Gilbert Top, pattern by Helen’s Closet, specifically for a trip to Greece over the summer. I used a sortof windowpane? hemstitch? linen for it, and planned to wear it on a day when we did an epic “urban hike” between Fira and Oia on the Greek island of Santorini. TL;DR: I adore this pattern and the shirt is everything I wanted it to be. The Gilbert Top is a classic camp collar, button-up woven shirt. “Camp collar” means there’s a separate collar pattern piece, but the way it integrates with the front facings of the shirt allow it to roll to the outside, making a double-pointed colla ..read more

Pietra Pants by Closet Core Patterns: A Sewing Love Story

I really, really love this pants pattern. They fit great right out of the package with minimal adjustments, they feel great to wear, and they are adaptable to a huge variety of activities. I made one pair, and I already have another pair cut out and ready to go–which hardly ever happens for me. These are the Pietra Pants from Closet Core patterns. I included them in a video sewalong series I’m hosting at The League of Dressmakers where we’re sewing five pants patterns, one per week, and as we progress each pattern gets a little more challenging and has more details and skills included. We sta ..read more
