The metaverse is coming, but why should I care?

Mark Zuckerberg changed his company’s name to “Meta” to reflect their new focus on future endeavours: bringing people together in virtual 3D space. Connecting through AR or VR devices into a shared and persistent digital world is often referred to as entering the metaverse. Not only by Meta. So, where does the idea come from, what will be possible and why should you care? The term was initially coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel “Snow Crash”. In this great book about a sci-fi future people will spend their time in this digital space to work and meet, but also to get hacked as persons ..read more

Hi everybody. Yoni Binstock published his 2nd edition of “What is Augmented Reality – Everything You Wanted to Know Featuring Exclusive Interviews With the Leaders of the AR Industry” in May 2020. As the title states, he interviews AR professionals on their personal views on AR and their vision for the future. I’ve joined the circle and am featured in the book with an interview. Now I wanted to share my interview with Yoni here, too. Please check thearbook.com to get a virtual or physical copy of the great book! It’s definitely worth reading all the interviews with AR industry leaders. Yoni Bi ..read more

Hi there and welcome to my website. My name is Tobias Kammann, Computer Scientist, and I run this page out of personal and professional interest for augmented reality – and to give you the latest updates on this amazing technology. I share news on AR, write my own articles, review new mixed reality software or hardware, and point to the best upcoming AR meetups or conferences – including my own. I typically attend AR/VR events like ISMAR or AWE and will give full reports on latest research and event talks from those happenings. What this Page is This page started off as a blog, when I touched ..read more

Hi everybody. I am always happy to connect with new people and join for real life events, virtual meetings and – of course – any kind of cooperation to push Augmented Reality and build the next computing platform together! With the current lock-down/virus situation I’ve decided to add this page to my website to give you a chance to know where you can meet me these days to stay in touch – be it virtually or live. Currently I am resident of Las Palmas, Gran Canary. Typically I will also travel to Munich a couple of times a year (where our #ARMUC regulars’ table is still running). But where to ge ..read more

With my best buddies over at www.mixed.de I’m co-hosting a weekly podcast on all about mixed reality (and AI). We run since 2016. It’s in German, though. But if you have a real-time translator with you (your brain or Google) it’s definitely worth tuning in! On Mixed Reality, we discuss the latest AR/VR technology, do hands-on reports on latest hardware, present cool demos or software, discuss use cases and tools or do some campfire philosophy chat about the meaning of all and if AR glasses will ever take off or if humanity is doomed before anyway. It’s always a fun discussion. We have a bigger ..read more

The Year of Virtual Augmented Reality (Event List)

2020 – the year of virtual meetups It seems like 2020 becomes the year of virtual reality for obvious reasons world-wide. It`s pretty hard to try out the latest AR glasses in a telepresence call. Simulating AR glasses in VR feels also pretty silly and not so quite close to reality. Damn, so there you have it. With Magic Leap losing grip right now and all going mad in Zoom calls, it`s a bit more quiet here on real conference hands-on and other AR news. Well, although I must admit the new Unreal Engine 5 is friggin` awesome from what they show! No LOD-creation is the biggest deal ever, if it tur ..read more

Hi everybody, 2019 is coming to an end (well, kind of) and I will finish my craziest year so far. We’ve been very busy developing AR/VR solutions in our company, but in parallel I started to raise my new born son with my wife. The biggest change you can have in your life! Also the greatest (and toughest) experience. That’s also why some of my posts got lost in limbo. I guess I have a good excuse for 2019. E.g. by now everybody has tried the HoloLens 2 or had the chance to read one of the many reviews. I discuss my HoloLens 2 impressions with my podcast team on mixed.de in episode #167. In shor ..read more

From flat ware to spatial ware Augmented World Expo came to an end last Friday and it`s time to get back to the desk and digest the latest info. There were some really great talks and innovative ideas to see. We were not disappointed and could see once more three beautiful Auggie awards at the end and it was pretty packed. There were some other VR highlights to try out – like the high-res Varjo VR-2 Pro with great finger tracking from Ultraleap. I finally got the chance to try out the HoloLens 2 (including updated VisionLib object tracking) and the fresh and “under construction” Lenovo A6 AR g ..read more

What’s up next? Busy days. Actually, I just wanted to publish an article titled “Facebook refuses to show their AR glasses”. As they did during Oculus Connect 6 just last week. But then again… what to talk about if they don’t actually show anything? Well to be fair, they showed a little bit. They talked about ongoing research, presented their own AR cloud titled “live maps” to create a digital twin of the world. What struck me there was the phrase with “intrinsic meanings of objects”: seems like Facebook will be integrating a form to actually understand objects within the world. This could dr ..read more

Hi everyone! Time to plan the rest of the year and check options what to attend. Typically I’m focusing on European (German) market and US conferences (sorry). What conference to attend? What makes sense if you are working in AR? What red letter days do we need to remember? When to expect new cool demos? Where can you try the latest hardware (e.g. play piano on the HoloLens 2). Here a quickly compiled list of next events from my list. Please feel free to send me more suggestions!
