Netflix Chief: We’re Not Making Fewer Films
Dark Horizons

Netflix’s reputation when it comes to original movies has been one of quantity over quality – the streamer posting films up left and right on its service with very little oversight or fanfare. For some filmmakers, this is a blessing as they have been able to make the projects they want for considerable budgets without interference from studio executives. On the other hand, it also aptly demonstrates the problems with this hands off approach with a series of polished yet decidedly mediocre movies from forgettable action movies like “Lift,” “Heart of Stone” and “Red Notice,” to some auteur drive ..read more

Earlier this week came the news that legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese was working on a new Frank Sinatra biopic which aimed to star Leonardo DiCaprio as Sinatra and Jennifer Lawrence as Ava Gardner. According to World of Reel, Frank’s oldest daughter and accomplished singer Nancy Sinatra apparently doesn’t approve going by the tone of a recent social media posting. Sinatra retweeted an image of her father and his wife, Ava Gardner, on Twitter with the original tweet captioned “Sorry Leo and JLaw, you will never be them.” Scorsese was previously looking to make a biopic of Sinatra back in 20 ..read more

“Star Trek: Discovery” Star On Early Woes
Dark Horizons

With the odd exception, the rule of thumb with many “Star Trek” series is that they usually don’t find their footing until their third season. Though there’s the occasional exceptional episode like “The Measure of a Man,” “Conspiracy” or “Q Who,” it wasn’t until the third season that “Star Trek: The Next Generation” found its rhythm. Same goes for “Deep Space Nine” and “Enterprise” which finally clicked after galvanising around a larger galactic threat and shake-up of their storytelling structure. “Voyager” and “Picard” similarly didn’t hit their best work until their third year. It could also ..read more

Netflix has released Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver” and with that release, the director has set a new record for himself. This second part of Snyder’s sci-fi epic has landed the worst reviews of his career going by Rotten Tomatoes. George Miller outdid himself with 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” delivering what is widely considered one of the greatest action films ever made and certainly one of the best films of the 2010s. So it’s no surprise that anticipation is sky high for his return to that world with “Furiosa,” a prequel starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth that will hopefully capture at least some of that ‘Fury Road’ magic. Speaking with Total Film, Taylor-Joy discussed an action sequence dubbed “Stairway To Nowhere” on the set – a 15-minute sequence that reportedly took 78 days to shoot due to its complexity ..read more
