Forgotten, But Not Gone ;-) And another sell off?

Well, howdy there Internet People ... sorry, almost stole Beau's opening.  So this blog has had a very spotty history since about 2013, which coincidentally lined up with a pretty significant life event. I am not sure that I could generate the enthusiasm to start up intense blogging again, especially in a world where this is mostly done on YouTube, but I feel that I should get back to some photography and I'm not sure I have the time or energy to vlog. I suppose we'll see which mix of technologies I choose as the outlet for my hobby ... One thing that I do have in the hopper in the second ..read more

The lamps we're not allowed to have. Exploring Dubai's lamps.

This is a fascinating look at LED lamps made and sold in Dubai (under a 5-year agreement) that makes our current generation look like power hungry monsters. The gist is that efficiency goes up as power goes down per element, so dropping the power and increasing the number of filaments makes the bulbs run cool and last for a very long time. Just for fun, I tested the concept by touching the base of an LED bulb that burns while I work less than 3 feet away. It was hot enough to burn my finger, reminding me that heat is the enemy of efficiency and long life where electronics are concerned. Imagin ..read more

Government versus Private Industry ... Who should finance research and development?
Kim Letkeman Blog
by Kim Letkeman

In North America, we seem to have a fascination -- or perhaps fixation -- with private industry being more efficient than the public service when it comes to doing "stuff". Whatever we want done, we think that private industry will make it happen faster and more efficiently than government could ever do. Bollucks. Note: I thought I might take this post into territory where I discuss the takeover of the elites (a.k.a. Oligarchy), or globalization, or some other angle on our fascination with the assumption that the wealthy have it all figured out. But the reality is that this is just a distract ..read more

Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS versus Tamron AF 28-75mm F2.8 XR Di LD

This is an unusual battle in that I am pitting the Tamron mid-range (a.k.a. “wedding”) zoom for FX against the Sigma mid-range zoom for DX. I am doing this because I have been using the Tamron since getting my D600 (camera and lens both bought separately at different Timmy's via Kijiji LOL) and I would like the flexibility of using the D7200 for that range instead. The Sigma gets magnificent reviews and I saw that Amazon in Canada has them for a very reasonable price, so I took a shot. My initial impression was very positive, with the Sigma looking like a serious lens, with the lens hood almos ..read more

GEEK Electric Heater – Best Little Area Warmer I Have Seen

This little heater costs around 60 bucks on Amazon.ca and is an amazing little value. I can’t find the original brand on Amazon, but there are two versions that look identical on there as of right now, so I will add links to them both below. I have been using it all winter and it makes life in an unheated basement bearable. The swing function works perfectly and the heat is more than adequate. If you walk away from it while running, it will eventually shut off, so I think it is pretty safe as well. My experience is positive enough to recommend this unit. I looked a long time for on ..read more

YouTube Sucks all of the Joy out of Creating Videos

One of the pleasures of YouTube is getting a few dollars for your efforts. I have been monetizing my videos for years and the trickle of money is small, but something that is surprisingly pleasant. It’s just nice to see a little bit come back for your time and effort. But no more. Small channels like mine are being completely shut out as the threshold is now 1000 subscribers (I have about 450) and 4,000 hours of watch time in the past year (I had 3950 in the last 365 days!!!). They gave me 30 days to more than double my subscribers and increase watch time just enough to get 4000 hours. I can d ..read more

I’m throwing away a perfectly good Epson printer because of their nasty policy to disable off brand ink cartridges :-( **Updated 14 Feb 2018**

As a photographer, I have always been partial to Epson printers. They do have issues like easily clogged heads, but I have always been happy with their output. I acquired a $150 Epson XP-530 Expression Premium Small-In-One (what a mouthful) for about $50 on sale last year at Best Buy, and I have to say that it is in many ways magnificent. It uses two black cartridges – a huge black cartridge for paper and a small cartridge as a fourth color, called photo black (presumably a pigment based ink for more realistic photos). I have not printed photos with it though, and yet the photo black is almost ..read more
