Did I Fully Process That?
A Healthy Slice of Life

Have you ever asked yourself that? Have you ever looked back on a period of your life and realized, only after the fact, that, wow, that was a lot. How did I make it through that? I try to be a self-aware person. Sure, I fall short often enough, but I try. One extension of this is trying to be cognizant of hard things (and good things!) as I walk through them. I want to ensure I feel my feelings and not try to shove them down. However, recently I was reflecting on the past few (five or so) years, kind of combing through the events of the year and milestones for our family. I got to 2020 and a ..read more

A Healthy Slice of Life

Every parent knows it; kids weren’t meant to sit still! Moving, playing, and learning take up so much of their short attention spans. In order to learn, our kids need to first develop skills that will help them focus. Getting our kids to concentrate may seem like an uphill battle, but I promise you, it’s absolutely doable! I’ve rounded up some of my favorite practical and effective strategies that have been helpful in my parenting journey that you can use to help your kids eliminate distractions and develop strong concentration muscles for improved focus. 22 Car Activities for Kids
A Healthy Slice of Life

I remember how stressful car rides felt when the girls were babies. Whether I was focused on trying to not have them fall asleep for the dreaded quick car nap or not being able to comfort them while they were upset because I had to keep my eyes on the road. As we’ve gone through all the phases from newborn to tweens, through trial and error, I found ways to keep all ages entertained… without screens, usually. We have a family rule that if it’s under two hours, no screen. Over two hours, enjoy your movies, kiddos! Going on car rides with your kids is inevitable. Unfortunately, kids have short ..read more

Spread Thin, Baking, & Prioritizing
A Healthy Slice of Life

Historically, this has left me feeling frustrated that I can’t keep up with ALL the things, but now with my wise 40 years of life experience, I don’t get overly bothered by it. Well, actually, I do, but I know to check myself before I wreck myself faster than I used to. I know to take a minute to breathe and prioritize. Somehow acknowledging that some balls are going to drop make it less frustrating. So, what’s happening you may ask? Well, some of it would be filed under vague blogging, which no one likes, so I won’t spend much time talking about the emotional stuff that is not my story to te ..read more

Today is supposed to be colder and rainy by this afternoon and honestly, we are all psyched. Well, maybe not Finley, but it’s been a very demanding week and some afternoon and evening R&R (we are going to do at at home girls spa day!), homemade pizza, and a movie sounds just like what the doctor ordered. But first, let’s catch up a bit, categorically. Watching Not much of anything except joining the kids when they watch a Shark Tank. It’s currently our family’s favorite show and I love watching the kids decern whether or not they’d invest and why. I was talking to David yesterday about th ..read more

February Chat & Meal Plan (!)
A Healthy Slice of Life
by Brittany Dixon

Good late February Monday morning! How’s it going? How is life? February has absolutely flown by around here, despite being out of my element (AKA out of my kitchen). Temperature have been mild, mid-50’s, so we’ve spent a lot of time outside on walk, playing kube, and grilling. I was talking to David the other day about the mild winter and he said “well, that under water volcano supposedly created a temporary rise in global temperatures I believe.” I stared at him like what? Then went to google and found out he was spot on- the 2022 Tonga eruption. I swear David always knows random tidbits to ..read more

Pantry Can Organization
A Healthy Slice of Life

Last year we did a pantry refresh and I don’t know what took us so long; we love the results! Changing the wire shelving to solid wood and being more thoughtful in organizing and storing products in a more functional way made a huge impact and still makes me smile every time I open the pantry. One of the biggest upgrades was my pantry can organization system because I feel a well stocked pantry means having a well stocked carton and can supply. Canned goods are pantry staples that can be used for so many different recipes. Being well stocked can help you easily prepare simple meals at a momen ..read more

Five on Friday

The kitchen reno isn’t helping at a time when I’d love to be baking bread, making soup, and leaning into the cozy season, *but* do you know what has helped? The sunshine! We have seen a lot of it this week and on Wednesday alone I spent two hours sitting in it and chatting with friends after co-op while the kids played basketball and dodgeball, then came home and spent another hour playing family Kube before it fully set. Sunshine is lifegiving, and if we aren’t going to have snow, then I’ll take 60 and sunny all day long, please. And with that, it’s Friday! This weekend’s plans include watch ..read more

My Nightly Self Care Routine
A Healthy Slice of Life

I wasn’t sure if this was a shareable post because anyone with big kids knows that there is no typical night. I might be ushering one child to an activity then swinging by to pick up the other and getting home in time to serve the crockpot dinner that has been simmering for the day. However the more I thought about, the more I realize that while my nightly self care routine might not look like a candle lit bubble bath and spa music, there are certain habits that stay fairly consistent that contribute to my wellness and peace. My Nightly Routine Magnesium In the beginning of 2023 one of my goa ..read more

Steamboat Family Ski Trip 2024
A Healthy Slice of Life

I didn’t mean to ghost you last week, but between the kitchen getting completely demoed and organizing packing for the ski trip (this list is so helpful), everything else got pushed to the back burner. Still, we managed somehow to be packed and ready to go early Wednesday morning. I made reservations for The Parking Spot (which saves a few bucks) and they got us to the airport in plenty of time for our first leg, Charlotte to Denver. A short hour layover and we were int he air heading to Hayden, the small airport outside Steamboat Springs, Colorado. We rolled the dice and found an uber, which ..read more
