Chinese and Indian diplomats met in Beijing on Wednesday for the 29th round of talks aimed at defusing tensions along their disputed boundary in the Himalayas.
The only takeaway from this meeting is that the two sides are actually talking to one another, which is significant in the current environment, given that ties between the two countries have soured considerably since a 2020 border clash in the Galwan River valley.

U.S. Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, provided fresh assurances to his Filipino counterpart Gilberto Teodoro Jr. that Washington stands ready to support Manila should tensions escalate with Beijing over territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
The two defense chiefs spoke by phone on Wednesday, less than a week after a violent confrontation occurred near the Second Thomas Shoal, where China Coast Guard ships used high-powered water cannons against a Philippines resupply vessel.

While China remains Southeast Asia’s largest infrastructure provider, major gaps are emerging between pledges and actual delivery, according to a new report by Australia’s Lowy Institute.
The report found a $52 billion difference between planned and implemented projects, “with more than half of this reflecting projects that have either been canceled, downsized, or otherwise seem unlikely to proceed.”

The future of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is preoccupying China watchers around the world. However, the debate frequently leaves out the most important stakeholders: leaders from recipient countries.
A new report from AidData polled leaders and senior officials from 129 Belt and Road countries about their perceptions of the initiative. It provides a fascinating glimpse into what a project — frequently described only in terms of Beijing’s ambitions or Western fears — actually looks like from the perspective of the Global South.

Three of the largest, most powerful governments in the Asia-Pacific region weighed in on Tuesday on the deteriorating security situation in the South China Sea, and condemned Beijing for its use of force against Filipino vessels.
South Korea and Australia issued statements from their foreign ministries that expressed concern about China’s behavior during two confrontations earlier this month. The tone of South Korea’s statement followed Japan’s lead on Monday with more veiled criticism, while Australia was very blunt in its accusation that China is engaging in “dangerous maneuvers ..read more

China’s point man for the Horn of Africa, Special Envoy Xue Bing, wrapped up a two-day visit to Mogadishu on Tuesday, during which he met separately with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.
The President thanked Xue for China’s “support of Somalia’s territorial integrity” — a reference to Ethiopia’s decision in January to sign a sea access deal with Somaliland, which Mogadishu worries could lead Addis Ababa to become the first country to formally recognize the breakaway region.

Zambia’s breakthrough deal on Monday to restructure $3 billion of Eurobond debt helps the southern African country move tantalizingly close to finally ending three years of brutal negotiations with its various creditors.
Even though President Haikinde Hichilema’s government has already negotiated a deal with bilateral creditors, particularly China, $3.5 billion of commercial loans — many from Chinese banks — still need to be discussed.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry fired back at critics in the U.S. and the European Union after both expressed support for the Philippines following last Saturday’s confrontation with the China Coast Guard in the South China Sea.
Spokesperson Lin Jian on Monday specifically called out a statement published by his U.S. State Department counterpart, Matthew Miller, that “condemned the dangerous actions by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) against lawful Philippine maritime operations.”
