Fly fishing enthusiasts gathered last month for a lively afternoon full of fly tying demonstrations, presentations, hearty laughter, and delicious food and drinks in the first-ever Central New York Fly Tying Symposium, held at 16 Stone Brewpub in Holland Patent. A kaleidoscope of colors lines the tables as fly tyers work hooks, thread, beads, fur, and other materials into usable lures that could entice a fish to take a taste. These varied flies are the interpretation of their tyer; some are made to “Match the hatch,” meaning they look like whatever native insects are present in the area they w ..read more

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Designed by Val Browning, son of firearms legend John Moses Browning, the Double Automatic shotgun was an innovative semi-auto 12 gauge produced from 1952 to 1971. While often cited as debuting in 1955, some sources indicate initial production began a few years earlier in 1952. A key feature was its short-recoil operation, where the barrel only moved about half an inch rearward when fired, reducing felt recoil compared to long-recoil designs. The Double Automatic uniquely loaded via a side port, allowing one round to go straight into the chamber a ..read more

Cook your Catch – Pecan Crusted Mahi Mahi (Dolphin)

I got the chance to run the Gulf Stream to chase after tunas recently. While we did do a 450-mile round trip out of Jacksonville looking for tuna, we ended up only finding a big line loaded with mahi mahi and a sailfish. So while we didn’t bring home any tuna, Mahi is definitely a good consolation prize. The Mahi, also known as a dolphin or dorado, is one of the coolest pelagic species you can run into offshore. They are often plentiful and quick to hit a lure or bait, so a great target to go after if numbers are your goal. A very colorful pelagic species, they often have a mix of bright green ..read more

POTD: The Auto Ejecting Revolver – Silver & Fletcher “The Expert”

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! In 1884, Hugh Silver and Walter Fletcher patented a rapid unloading system for gate-style revolvers, which they integrated into Webley’s New Model RIC as an optional feature known as “The Expert”. The key function of their design was to allow users to eject a full cylinder of spent cartridges by simply pulling the trigger six times, instead of manually operating the slow ejector rod. To prevent accidental discharge if a live round remained, Silver and Fletcher also incorporated a safety that retracted the firing pin when engaged. Around 350 of these ..read more

Do-It-Yourself Project (DIY) – Outdoor Kayak Rack
AllOutdoor

So if you have a kayak and are short on garage space like me you need a kayak rack to properly store your kayak. While kayaks are pretty tough they do have a couple of weaknesses. The plastic they are made from is a tough and impact-resistant material but it can warp if you store your kayak improperly. Especially with bigger and heavier fishing kayaks, they can flex over time if stored improperly leading to problems down the road. Which if you have a good deal of money invested into your kayaks is not an ideal thing to happen. So I’ll show you how to make a simple single kayak rack that should ..read more
