This is Thursday, April 18, 2024. This is Week 6, Day 4. This is Fartlek Day. Gosta Holmer, a Swedish Olympian who competed against Jim Thorpe, invented this interval program for running on trails and in parks. Mr. Holmer developed it for the Swedish cross-country team in the 1930s, which did poorly in European competitions, and Gosta wanted to motivate them. The Olympic decathlete and pentathlete came up with a wonderful program. This is Wednesday, April 17, 2024. This is your workout for Week 6, Day 3. This is the first full day of Spring. Your workout today: Warm-up today, 45-55 minutes easy to moderate pace, 6 x 150-meter stride-outs, Cooldown, hydrate, get out of wet clothes, recover. Editor’s Note: This is Stuart Weir’s feature on Vivian Cheruiyot, who missed the Athens 2004 Olympics after competing in Sydney 2000, then Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016. At the age of 40, she just took 3rd at the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris in 2:21.46. Tuesdays are tough days. This is your daily training for Tuesday, April 16, 2024. Week 6, Day 2. Your workout, Warm-up, 16 times 300 meters hard, at a two-mile pace, 100-meter jog or walk, 30 minutes of easy to moderate running, 6×150 meter stride-outs, cooldown, hydrate, recover, get wet clothes off, change into dry clothes, Larry’s Deep Thoughts: This is one of my favorite workouts.
