My name is Wren and I am in the third year of my trouser making apprenticeship with Anderson and Sheppard. I work under my brother Finnan who has been with the company for over 10 years. At the start of last year Finnan built a workshop at his home in Sussex, because of the lockdowns it has meant traveling into London has not always been possible and so still being able to work with him everyday has been a great experience  We start work at 8:30am most mornings usually after I’ve had breakfast with Finnan and my nephew. We discuss what we need to prioritise that week, I might be s ..read more

In Praise of Cords
Anderson & Sheppard Blog

The author Kingsley Amis is reputed to have adored his cords so much that he dreaded any social occasion which necessitated the wearing of anything else. I find myself empathising more and more with Mr Amis but this wasn’t always the case. I am a recent convert to the joys of the wale but am quickly becoming a most vocal proponent, one who finds himself reaching more and more for these most unassuming of trousers.  My sartorial volte-face comes after years of skepticism believing they were inherently fuddy-duddy, to be worn by men of a certain age whose hobbies usually include real ale d ..read more

Striking In.
Anderson & Sheppard Blog

I have been working under Les as a coat cutter for over a year now and one of my favourite parts of the bespoke process it striking in. Les has spent a lot of time showing me how to strike in correctly, when I was first learning he was right by my side giving me instructions as I went. I am now able to do most of it on my own with Leslie checking each stage as I go. I am striking out a checked cloth today which is slightly more complicated as the checks need to match, so I would always get Les to help me with this. When striking a job one always has to consider how much cloth the ..read more

My Life as a Trouser Cutting Apprentice
Anderson & Sheppard Blog

I have worked at Anderson & Sheppard for the past ten months. I started working in the last week of September 2016. This coincidentally was the same week I should have returned to University. Before I started working for the company I had been studying tailoring at the London College of Fashion. Over my summer holidays I had been doing work experience at several houses on the Row. Through a series of fortuitous events I found myself being contacted by Anderson & Sheppard,  they wanted to see if I would be interested in a vacancy that they had in their trouser department. After a ..read more
