While we have been neglecting this blog, Pencil Revolution Press has been busy with zines — and notebooks! Following up on our hit fall staple-bound notebooks, we have started to stock journals that are all made by hand in Baltimore. Gets yours here, and make sure to sign up for our email list. This week, most of the journal drop is on the way to folks from our list before we posted anywhere else, and exactly half of the pocket notebooks within mere minutes of me hitting Send. We also take custom orders/commissions. Johnny has some time to get a few out via Priority Mail by the end of this we ..read more

We were lucky enough to get another lovely write-up in Broken Pencil Magazine, the New Yorker of zine publications. This time, they reviewed last year’s zine about letter writing, Penpalling. This little guy is still available in our shop, and it still includes the writing paper and “cue” letter sheet. Orders yours here. (Previously reviewed in Broken Pencil: Depression ain’t the sads and OCD ain’t a word ..read more

Musgrave Sampler Pack.
Pencil Revolution

While summer hits the Northern Hemisphere, some of us wish we could travel. Normally, I’d be picking out coffeeshops and bookstores for whatever trip I was making and also selecting pencils and notebooks to take with me. This could obviously turn into a pretty complicated endeavor. But Musgrave made the perfect take-along for travel, and it’s AMAZING. I never realized how many of Musgrave’s pencils are round. Musgrave has long sold an assortment pack, but their old packaging of some loose-fitting plastic was, well, it didn’t protect the pencils inside very well. More often, these days, their ..read more

Eco Pencils.

Eco pencils have always been a touchy subject for me. I reject the notion that something is necessarily “eco friendly” because it’s made of hemp or recycled dog poop. The environmental impact of everything we buy is far more complicated than that. So this month’s zine wound up sprinkled with a small smattering of self-righteousness. But it also highlights some of the eco pencils we had around HQ. Check it out here ..read more

Last week, we released Pencil Revolution #15 — SOLVITUR AMBULANDO: The Walking Issue. It’s all about walking, Pencil Walking, bullet pencils, and it includes directions for making your own Walking Book. Comrades can check it out on Etsy. I will say that the tiny FREE notebooks are almost gone. There are only a handful left. And there are a few copies of #13 and #14 left with free shipping ..read more

Last month featured a partly hand-drawn cover. In the February edition of the Pencil Revolution Zine, we took at look at some dead pencils that we miss. Below is one such obituary. Others include the original Blackwing, the Mirado, and copying pencils. Get your issue while they still ship free! There are only a few copies of the first printing left and even fewer of the January issue. (Subsequent printings cannot ship free, and #14 will most likely only be produced in color for the first printing.) We have heard both publicly and privately that #14 is some Comrades’ favorite so far. Maybe we ..read more

Reviewing the Parker “51” Fountain Pen.
Pencil Revolution

(The new Parker “51” asleep in its case.) I’ve never reviewed a fountain pen before. Just one year ago, at the Baltimore Washington pen show, I would not be caught dead with a fountain pen. I walked around the ballroom wearing a shop apron full of pencils and a Bic Cristal shirt, handing out pencils and sharpening them with the crank sharpener I was carrying around. (Image by one of my Erasable co-hosts.) Well, COVID-19 has turned the world upside down, and now I own about — # — (shhhhh!) fountain pens. The new Parker “51” came in last week, and — WOW, holy @#$%! It is like a very short full-c ..read more
