We all know how important mindset is, but changing our mindsets as adults can feel like an uphill battle. In Episode 132, I talked with Becca Silver about growth, mindset, and coaching. Today I’m bringing a little bit of a different perspective with my guest AJ Crabill from Effective School Boards. He works extensively with superintendents and school boards to create conditions for improved student outcomes by changing adult mindsets through a few big changes. During the episode, we talk about how changing adult mindsets and behaviors leads to improved student outcomes. AJ shares the 3 ke ..read more

Character Analysis Anchor Charts - six anchor charts for analyzing characters in fiction

Let's talk character analysis and anchor charts. Anchor charts aren't posters; you don't just print them out and stick them on the wall (and hope that somebody looks at them). They're meant to be a record of an anchor lesson or activity that kids will remember. Interactive lessons are especially memorable, so I try to start my unit on character analysis with something hands-on that kids can manipulate and engage with in a fun way! We know kids learn better through play than any other method. Here are six of my favorite Character Analysis Anchor Charts to help you teach analyzing characters i ..read more

The next three months of The Coaching Podcast will focus on the human side of coaching - how we interact with others, how we think and talk to ourselves, and how we communicate. A big part of this is mindset, specifically a growth mindset. Growth mindset is a huge buzzword, and it has been for quite a while. We work towards getting our students to approach their lives with a growth mindset, and we try to help parents do the same. But how does this apply to instructional coaches? My guest on this episode is here to help us learn more about this important topic. Becca Silver is the CEO an ..read more

Welcome to Season 4 of Buzzing with Ms. B: The Coaching Podcast! I’m so excited for this season because every single episode topic and guest came from a request, question, or challenge that you have as a coach. I sent out a survey to everyone on my email list and then compiled it all to create the episodes for this season. The biggest collection of responses is a set that I categorized as the human side of coaching. There's one thing we know that we're going to deal with as instructional coaches and that’s feelings. We can't just walk into a classroom and say “this is what you do, let's g ..read more

A Simple Behavior Management Plan for Coaches, Ep. 130 Buzzing with Ms. B: The Coaching Podcast

My administration used to ask me to coach in classrooms with no discernible behavior plan, aside from maybe yelling or punishment. I really wanted to avoid those rooms because it was stressful to coach in them. Since I couldn’t run away, I had to figure out a plan that worked when I was coaching on campus.  Over time, I created a proactive and positively framed management system for coaching in the classroom. My simple behavior management plan increases positive behaviors and helps reduce power struggles with students. You can use it whenever you model or co-teach in classrooms without ..read more

Lately, instructional coaches are being asked to coach more around classroom management and positive behavior support. This can feel daunting, especially for coaches who are more comfortable with curriculum and instruction than behavior management. I know when I was a new coach, this was hard for me. It’s still something I continually learn about because there’s always something new out there to try, and management impacts so much in the classroom. That’s why I know you’re going to get a lot out of this podcast.  In this episode, I have a coaching call with Brandy Brown about behavior su ..read more

I know these last couple of school years have been really hard for everyone. Two years of instability and trauma have impacted students, parents, teachers, and the school system overall. Instructional Coaches are often asked to focus on the instructional side of the work, but we all know that if classroom management isn't in place, nothing else is going to happen in that classroom. This month, I'm releasing a series of podcast episodes around behavior management because I've gotten so many questions about it recently. In episode 127 of The Coaching Podcast, I talk with Dr. Deonna Smith about ..read more

Any instructional coach who has tried to initiate coaching cycles on their campus knows how complicated and challenging it can be. We struggle to build relationships with teachers and help them understand how coaching cycles can support them, rather than being one more thing added to their plates. It's also difficult to make time for cycles when coaches are pulled in so many different directions, whether that's by administrators who don't understand our role, or because of the current needs of the school. In this episode of The Coaching Podcast, you get to listen in on a coaching call as I he ..read more

Has this ever happened to you? You model in a classroom as part of a coaching cycle, and you feel like things are going really, really well. The teacher responds positively and talks about how they can use the learning in their classroom. So, you think, Great, this is happening! Then you visit a few days later, and nothing has changed at all.  Many coaches have told me that they struggle with teachers who get stuck and don't implement new learning from coaching cycles. The teachers do the work during the cycle and then when the coach leaves, everything stops. In this episode of The Coach ..read more
