Receiving stories and wrestling with pedagogic tensions post-Oct. 7

Brené Brown teaches in Atlas of the Heart that stories are sacred. As receivers of stories, we must treat those stories with respect and care, we should be curious and affirming and we have to believe people when they tell us how they experienced something. As Jews, it is in our DNA to tenderly and mindfully carry stories forward, to retell them with dignity and awe and to impart the lessons found in them. In the wake of Oct. 7, Jewish educators in North America immediately went into action mode, contemplating how they would address the horrors in their schools and education programs in the ..read more

Combating campus antisemitism: A call for decisive action in America’s universities

In an era when antisemitism has reemerged with a vengeance on college campuses across America, the need for action has never been more urgent. As Jewish students face an onslaught of hate — from overt acts of aggression to insidious anti-Israel rhetoric — its clear that our identity is under siege. As a concerned Jewish leader, I am alarmed to see Jewish students facing escalating harassment, vile rhetoric and overt discrimination. This bigotry has gone on too long and must be forcefully confronted before it becomes further normalized. The Oct. 7 terrorist attack and the ensuing war in Gaza ..read more

American Jewish philanthropists should put their own oxygen masks on first

You board an airplane and after everyone is seated you get the familiar in-flight safety demonstration. Stow your items, fasten your safety belt, place your cell phones on airplane mode. The flight attendant then instructs: “If you are traveling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your oxygen mask first, and then help the other person.” This oxygen mask instruction is quite simple but counterintuitive — you can save yourself and others only if you do the seemingly selfish act — put your mask on first. It’s an instinct for self-preservation that has been lost among America ..read more

Two days after the Oct. 7 terror attacks in southern Israel, Daniel Jeydel, received a call from a non-Jewish friend with whom he had attended a Reality journey run by the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies. She was the chief marketing officer for a major NBA team, asking what she could do to help those affected by the attacks. Based on his recommendation, her organization donated $250,000 to United Hatzalah. “Theres many more stories like that,” Jeydel, the founder of the Bashert Group, a strategic advisory firm, told eJewishPhilanthropy. Purim, Pesach and prosemitism

It is the Purim-to-Pesach holiday season and it is high time for us to lift our spirits, to turn from today’s painful challenges to its incredible opportunities and to lose some sleep over the looming issue of prosemitism. I am not alone in feeling that the focus on the hostility we Jews are experiencing is getting to me. Most Jews seem to be feeling this way, while rabbis and educators feel unhappily compelled to focus on defending the Jewish people instead of elevating them. It has felt like this for a while. Several months ago, sitting in conversation with my friend and colleague Jonatha ..read more

LONDON — Gateways sits quietly in a one-story building on a suburban street in the northwest of the city, roughly halfway between the Jewish neighborhoods of Golders Green and Edgware. Dominating the entry area, with its breakout spaces for students to relax or eat, is a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen, presided over by food writer Judi Rose, whose late mother, Evelyn Rose, was widely considered the doyenne of Anglo-Jewish cookery. Around the corner is a fully equipped gym, and down the corridor there is a line of individual classrooms, each holding only one or two students, where they get ..read more

Exploring enrollment in congregational education: Research findings provide insights beyond the numbers

For more than a decade, the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland has observed trends in congregational education enrollment in the Jewish community. For instance, according to the Jewish Education Project study “From Census to Possibilities: An Overview,” congregational education program enrollment decreased nationally by 41% between the 2006-2007 and 2019-2020 school years. We recently undertook a research study to understand these trends, with a specific interest in what has drawn parents to enroll their children in congregational education programs and what has led them to decide not to en ..read more
