In December of last year, I got an email that I had been nominated for a teaching award for some organization I had never heard of called Golden Apple. I had to fill out an application and get two letters of recommendation. I was surprised that someone had nominated me without telling me and then honestly, kind of annoyed that I had extra work to do during the week of Homecoming, which is my busiest time.
I went to my friend and colleague Amy to ask her to write a letter of recommendation and found out that she was the one who nominated me. Everything was due on December 15th. I went back to ..read more

I needed a cool-ish idea for an Algebra II lesson to use while I was being observed. The topic: complex fractions. This topic brings my organizing-obsessed brain much satisfaction but is not exactly exciting.
I went back to my roots....I love sorting!
Students were given 7 pieces to put in the correct order of being solved.
After about 1 minute, I told the class that the piece with the @ symbol was the original problem and should be their starting point.
After another minute, I asked if they had a guess for which piece is the last piece. Most students can guess the order bec ..read more

It's that time of year again for my unit circle projects!
My requirements are that it can't be made out of paper and has to contain radians, degrees, and ordered pairs.

I've forgotten how to feel positive emotions.
I think I've said 'it is what it is' so many times that I forgot how to feel happy or excited. I'm definitely still able to feel anger, irritation, hopelessness, and sadness. So why are my other emotions frozen or missing altogether?
At the beginning of the pandemic, I felt like I was starting my summer break early and getting an extended vacation. Now it feels like I took a long break from being me.
I see why being described as resilient by others can seem to be an insult or at the very least, nothing to be proud of. Resilience doesn't co ..read more

In my last post, I gave an overview of the changes my school made during the pandemic. In this post I want to talk about the changes I made at the classroom level.
Before the pandemic, here's a summary of how I ran my classes.
Monday- teach new skill by working out examples with students on the board that they write down in their interactive notebook, I have them work out some on their own and then give them the answer
Tuesday- practice new skill (with notebooks open) by playing a game or activity, usually involving dry erase, sometimes involving cards, scavenger hunts, etc
Wednesday- quick r ..read more

The first few days of the pandemic starting in my area (mid-March) I thought I was going to be really cool and write down something that was happening each day of the pandemic. I did not.
Here's what I wrote for the first few days:
March 11- NBA and NCAA suspend seasons, Houston cancels rodeo, many colleges send students home and switch to online for rest of semester
March 12- Governor will not shut down all schools, we will close if a case is with 50 miles of us
March 13- Governor closes all Illinois schools from March 17-30
March 14- many chain stores are shut ..read more

Does anyone who has already made their math videos for their curriculum have any tips or tricks or things they wish they had done or done differently?
Before I make these 100ish videos ?

Make them short 5-7 min each. Include your face when you can. Have a rough idea of what you want, but aim for 1 take each time - mistakes are ok for them to see.

I asked the #mtbos if anyone had resources for solving systems by substitution that is not a worksheet. I have some nicely scaffolded worksheets to introduce substitution and elimination in this unit so I don't want to worksheet them to death for practice. And maybe they won't need any more practice but every year is different. I had a lot of great responses so I thought it was worth sharing here.
