Chinese People Do Not Raise Their Hands
SHI Group China
by Jim Nelson

Chinese people do not raise their hands in school full stop. This is primary through college. American  and many Western schools are much more active. What does that say about hiring in China? In a US class of any age, you could expect some students to raise their hands at a query from an instructor. What does this stark difference say? Westerners are less afraid of their own skin.  Not all are, but enough that some people will raise their hands while in China none will. So people you hire in China are all the ones who never raised their hands in school.  Does that mean they are ..read more

Hiring is People Focused Plus
SHI Group China

Hiring is people focused is a no brainer I suppose, but lets take a look at this topic and see what we can do. You hire people and not resumes is the first step.  Resumes often get us going the wrong way actually. We may be thinking people, and then the resume shows up, and it is all about experience and maybe schooling.  Somehow, people loose their focus on needing the right person.  People start saying this person changed jobs too much. What they mean is that this person is not as good. Yet, they cannot step back and say, “I wonder what bad thing happened to this person.” Hiri ..read more

There is Money To Be Made in China
SHI Group China

China, the number two economy, has looked a little shaky, but it is definitely number two. Hiring has been easier as the labor market has been a little soft. Now is the time to hire to capture business or to do better in supply chain work. There is money to be made in China. We have been getting busy as the market has opened, and businesses see the value of the market in China. We have contact with some successful Amazon companies who find China to be the very best place to find products and get them to market. What are they seeing? China’s market and manufacturing ecosystem are unparalleled i ..read more

Finding the Right People – The Holy Grail
SHI Group China
by Jim Nelson

Guess finding the right people should not be a comedy Finding the right people is the goal of every hiring manager and person assisting him. The challenge is double when you want to do it cross culturally in China. Most early efforts can come up with mediocre resumes. At a higher level, recruiters can bring in the candidates who have mediocre resumes and are already faked the resumes to look better and lie their way through the interview. So now, companies feel better because they have candidates with resumes that now look good and interviewees who can talk like they are smart and capable. H ..read more

Reaching Higher in Recruiting
SHI Group China

SHI Group is reaching higher in recruiting to make sure you get the right person the first time every time. Well, for a long time, I have been saying we are 95% successful in placing the right person the first time, but a long string of more first time successes means we are now at 96.0%. Yes, we are reaching higher, and it shows. Hiring does not have to be hope and guess work.  On boarding the first person you like is dicey and you know. Hiring from the first person you like who is also real and actually the right person is the way to do it. This sounds simple, and I guess it is, but it ..read more

Breaking the Recruiting Rules
SHI Group China

Many people learn recruiting rules along the way. At SHI Group you can find us breaking the recruiting rules to get you better talent and more talent. One rule is get resumes with no gaps in employment Every rule has its own reasons. People believe that good people are universally known and will never be out of work. Good hires are thought to have infinitely high EQ to handle bad bosses.   Might I add that some of those high EQ people are very manipulative, and some of them are the worst politicians you can hire.  Few workers have infinite connections with bosses in competing co ..read more

Responsibilities or Goals for Hiring?
SHI Group China

Most JD’s list requirements and responsibilities, which is not wrong , but to capture the interest of candidates, we have to consider responsibilities or goals for hiring. Candidates can be attracted to three things they are expected to accomplish in the next period like first year. Responsible for sales, customer contracts and reporting or $500,000 in product, develop relations with 50 customer contacts and earn money by maintaining sales records to show what you did. OK, this might be manipulative, but you get my meaning, The right hires want a mountain to climb not a bolder to bear. See al ..read more

Getting Candidates the Job Offer

Getting candidates the job offer usually works, but problems should be avoided. Let’s look closer on key issues especially as far as the candidates are concerned. In our case this happens when someone you would like to hire passes our background check, and we recommend it as a good hire to make. We usually know what the candidate’s bottom line is. We can share with you. One issue we care about is like this: The candidate at the start of the process says 20K RMB a month is good, and we query more to make sure. Then, after they capture your attention in the interview, they come back to us and sa ..read more

It’s Not Who We Place-Its Who We Refuse
SHI Group China
by Jim Nelson

Let’s talk about who we refuse. As bad placements get sacked, and they lie about what happened, these bad hires get passed around. You get extra chances to make them an offer.  Now the example. In a headquarters about to to hire a finance executive who interviewed so well.  A little research showed this guy was piling up degrees and never really doing anything worthy of this position. A little more, and we saved that headquarters from making a bad hire. We instead placed a brilliant finance executive who then made them millions.  This last minute refusal and placement led me ste ..read more
